Re: The Initial Technical Questions Thread

I have already got it four times for 5 completed units plus 5 still running.
At various stages of the process.
Apparently without any more damage so far.

I am a little more concerned about one output file which has already passed the 1,500,000 bytes limit reported somewhere else earlier in this thread, and it has another 2.5 hours to go... Will see...

Cheers. Jean.

Re: The Initial Technical Questions Thread

Not encountered the excess file size. Looked up the 131 code in the BOINC FAQ:

http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?langu...0ba1d93b35691ec1725fa9a35
ERR_FILE_TOO_BIG -131

One of the output files is bigger than the maximum set by the project for upload.
BOINC will not try to upload this file.

Solution: Go to the project's forums and report this behavior.

So that was handled and saw it was confirmed as seen by the techs.

Got 3 Rice running concurrently+1 HCC on the Q6600 and not noticing anything in terms of system performance.

Well, that's better news, because I watched this file during a previous completion and it is greatly reduced in size (about 4:1 if I remember well actually it is about 2 to 1) before uploading. Compression probably.

Re: The Initial Technical Questions Thread

We have bumped the file size limit up to 3MB from the current limit of 1.5MB. This will prevent the error.

Re: The Initial Technical Questions Thread

Bad news: finally the file size which is considered for the test is before compression. So I have just wasted 8 hours of CPU time with a final file size of 2,741,182 bytes (for about 640 computations). Since this processor is running at 2.88 GHz only I am afraid that your new limit will still be too low in too many cases.

By the way, why are you trying to adjust that size so close? This is artificially erroring work which went fine beside this. Move up the limit consistently (at least 5 MB). If there is a risk of some WUs getting out of control they will reach the limit anyway.

And also why wait the end of the job to declare it in error? As said earlier it was visible four hours ago that the limit was reached. If there must be a limit check it in the application and leave when it is reached.

Last point: if 3 MB (before compression) is considered too big, why not reduce the duration of these WUs to 6 hours or even less?

Cheers. Jean.

Re: The Initial Technical Questions Thread

We have bumped the file size limit up to 3MB from the current limit of 1.5MB. This will prevent the error.

Further to what Jean says above, I can confirm that although I am getting 'Exited with DLL initialization' errors in the Boinc messages for ALL wu's on ALL my machines whether using Vista/XP or Windows Server X64 the ONLY wu's that end up with a computation error are those that also finish with 'Output File Exceeds size limit - all the others seem to complete fine.

I am still getting these 'exceeds file limit' errors at 1.5MB even after the bumping to 3MB as reported by knreed - is this because the wu's were already downloaded to my machines prior to the new limit being set? - in which case should I abort all the units downloaded before this increased limit was set?

13/05/2008 12:37:39|World Community Grid|Computation for task R00001_190c3455a075584ed3bbbd9a1287cf67_00_14 finished

13/05/2008 12:37:39|World Community Grid|File size: 1788863.000000 bytes. Limit: 1500000.000000 bytes

The other puzzle is why are ALL the WU's exiting with DLL initialization errors and then re-starting at various times during completion on all my machines over all OS's?

IE:
13/05/2008 12:01:28|World Community Grid|Task R00001_135ba81a11aed1cc1a7f7eb9bd0847ab_15_4 exited with a DLL initialization error.

Re: The Initial Technical Questions Thread

Hi Adywebb,

Yes. The limits are in the WU. We need new WUs.

The other puzzle is why are ALL the WU's exiting with DLL initialization errors and then re-starting at various times during completion on all my machines over all OS's?

It is a puzzle. We really need a way to identify these DLL problems for all projects.

Re: The Initial Technical Questions Thread

Thanks Lawrence - I will abort all the older WU's and hopefully get some of the higher limit ones.

I have never had DLL initialization errors on any of my machines before with any other project, so it is something to do with this specific project.

I have wasted over 300 computing hours so far with these sad

confused Re: The Initial Technical Questions Thread

I wonder, windows has options, 'optimization hacks' are a better words maybe, that allows the unloading of DLL's from memory. I pertinently won't do that.

Just a teeny weeny thought.

(so far 5 of the new issue crawled through at a boringly flat 8.00 hours and of the few that already show in the Result Status detail listing by others, none have erred.)

PS: There is a good chance I'll be showing off the 'ear' of rice before any of the alter ego's ;>)
