As you may have seen, we have had newsletters, announcements, and reminder emails stating that we will be discontinuing the use of the United Devices (UD) MetaProcessor based grid software and using BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) exclusively. Within a week or two, the last work units will be sent out for the United Devices agents. When these complete and send back their result, the research program will be replaced with a "null project program" which sleeps and shows a message on the screen saver or the agent's graphics screen. This message will contain information about how to upgrade the UD based software to use the newer BOINC software. We have made efforts to make this upgrade as simple as possible, which includes automatic uninstalling of the UD software. We thank all of the members for their contributions to our projects so far and hope you will continue to contribute using the BOINC software.

We have stopped sending out new work units on UD today. Instead, we have sent a null work unit that sleeps and displays a message indicating how to find instructions for upgrading to the Boinc software. Over the next few weeks we will still be waiting for the remaining work units to finish under UD and send their reults to the servers. If we don't get all of them back that we need, we will use Boinc to finish those. Thank you for you all of your contributions via the UD agent. We hope to see you continue contributing using Boinc.

You could conceivably compute workunits on a flashdrive. HOWEVER, they also have a certain time before failure, especially if it is an older one that does not spread the writes across the entire drive. Blasting the same sector could mean an early death.
