ran all day w/o problem. found "waiting to contact..." message when I checked after dinner. I selected "retry communications" from Advanced menu, and got it running again (7:10:51) Hoping to determine why it is halting...

Is your "Connect to...." set to 1.0 days? Your work request is exactly 24 hours. Since 3 RICE are slightly more than 24 hours, you got 2. It finishes them and then will wait till the 24 hours are over. Probably (also) in your prefs you got a "Confirm before connecting to Internet" ticked, else the uploads would be immediate if BOINC knew you were permanently connected to the internet. Untick that option. At any rate it's for sure something with how you configured either the website profile or local preferences.
----------------------------------------Let us know and post the global_prefs_override.xml and global_prefs.xml file content if it is not fixed.

One of the cases previously reported with that message was a malformed WCG url. But, if it's a case of just the firewall configuration, it could be permissions. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=5493#169813 Note that some Vista software tends to have problems with assuming that URLs end early when they contain a # character. |

Okay, first, I am geek level 0.5. I hold my breath everytime I venture into Advanced tab-universe.
Have not mentioned previously that I run XP Pro; ISP = MSN; BOINC = ver. 5.10.45 I let BOINC install/configure, whatall, to default settings, where I presume they remain. "Connect about every" = 0.200 days "Additional work buffer" = 0.30 "Confirm before connecting to internet" is not/has never been checked. I will wait for another occurance, then find/post the suggested .xml files for y'all. |

Check the Activity menu and the network option. Hitting the Project Update button or the Retry Communications menu option forces a line to open for5 minutes, but if your Activity menu for networking is closed, it would also wait, on you. For the test set to "Network Activity Always Available".
