Re: Problem

The most common reason for this is that you used two names when you joined. Please open BOINC Manager, in the advanced view. Look on the projects tab under "account". What does it say?

Re: Problem

Grandma Pachi, can you continue running the WCG client and see if the two work units that you are currently working on get sent back? I will keep an eye on them as well to see if that happens.

I am not sure why you have not received any credit, but I am fairly certain that WCG has not been "using" your computer since you haven't returned any work units.

Didactylos, there is only one member with the email address used by Grandma Pachi. It looks like the computer was registered just after she signed up, but for some reason no results have been returned. She does have two results in progress, both of which were just downloaded yesterday (the 7th).

I checked her CPID on boincstats and there are no results from any other projects.

Re: Problem

A Device wont show / is counted until a result is returned. Only the member can see devices that were created and have work assigned.

Until GP confirms to nelsoc what's up with her client / tasks, posting a message log for instance, it's hard to follow up.

Re: Problem

Hello Grandma Pachi,
That looks good - 58% through a work unit. Does 'My Grid' - 'Results Status' show that any results have been returned? (Explained in http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=6105 ) If not, you might want to review the post on problems with Vista at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=12856

confused Re: Problem

Hi Lawrence,

I do not know if it is Boinc, but my computer freezes and slow down when I am running the boinc projects.
I would love to have you or someone else do a distance fixing or download the program to a special file with privileges, like someone I read in the forum did.
I am not real clear on how to handle all these stuff
sorry, please advice

Re: Problem

Hello Grandma Pachi,
biggrin Slow computer?

Yes, diagnosis is difficult at a distance, but in your case . . . .

First, Vista is extremely large. Windows XP takes up 3 GB on the disk drive. Vista takes 20 GB. Even though your memory size is 1 GB, this is minimal for Vista. By default, BOINC will run 1 work unit per core - - 2 simultaneous tasks on your dual-core computer. This will clog up your memory as it tries to run Vista and 2 BOINC application programs.

So go to 'My Grid' - 'Device Manager' and then click on your Selected Profile (I use 'home'). Read down until you come to Advanced Options - Processor Usage.

You want to set 'On multiprocessors, at most use: 1 processors'.

Then select 'Save' at the bottom to actually change your settings.

You might want to change the Workunit Cache settings as well. Some people boast of the days of work units in their cache. I use 0.1 days. Why try to keep more than a few hours on my drive?

The switch from Windows XP to Vista has been an eye-opener. The open-source BOINC project has been struggling to develop a BOINC 6 that can run easily on Vista. My personal guess is that it might be debugged in 2009, but I am not betting money. BOINC 5.10 installs easily on Windows XP, but on Vista it must be installed to a user selected file such as C:/BOINC. The automatic install to C:/Program Files/BOINC will fail due to access permissions, as explained in http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=12856

I try to avoid using BOINC graphics as much as possible. We are trying to get the BOINC 6 graphics API to run with Vista, but I am paranoid. So my screen saver is 'blank'. Or pick some other screen savere, but not BOINC or WCG.

In general, every bit of information you send us helps us understand your problems better. There are a vast number of threads about problems with Vista, about it aborting running work units when restarting a computers that had BOINC installed in Program Files, etc. There is a lot of information in Start Here and on the web site in My Grid, but it takes time and lots of questions to find out what is important and how things work.
