Stand Up to Cancer

Was watching the program "Stand Up to Cancer" the other night and they spoke of alot of work going toward finding the cure for Cancer. I wonder if WCG is apart of that work or are we doing another type of work on Cancer?

You can read more about our past and present cancer projects here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/viewResearch.do

Sorry, we can't tell you about our upcoming cancer projects (except to say that more cancer projects are planned).

Re: Stand Up to Cancer

I found the web site, and saw nothing about HCC or WSCG, so here is the message that I left:

"It would have been helpful to all had you mentioned the current Help Conquer Cancer project in Public Distributed Computing at World Community Grid (http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org. Thousands of people singly and in groups are lending free computer time to "crunching" data in this very worthwhile project, just one of a bunch at WCG. We need all the Press we can get."

Besides crunching itself, this is what I do personally to try and help, which is to go after the press.

Re: Stand Up to Cancer

This is why I was wondering if the work that WCG was doing was for another type of Cancer since nothing was said about the 1,000 of people around the world that are running WCG and other projects looking at finding a cure in our lifetime.

I much more like to tell someone that we got rid of Cancer instead of killing off all the wildlife!

Re: Stand Up to Cancer

I think the World Community Grid philosophy fits into the Stand Up 2 Cancer philosophy, even though it is not connect with it. Part of the rationale for Stand Up 2 Cancer is to foster new approaches to cancer research, and World Community Grid is certainly a new type of approach (I had to laugh when journalists covering the CERN experiment presented grid computing as something very futuristic). Some things that WCG has already done could also lead to great improvements in the near term in cancer treatment, such as the project we did a while back to find genetic patterns in who benefits from different types of chemotherapies. That certainly fits into what I see as Stand Up 2 Cancer's more applied approach. Also, Stand Up 2 Cancer is partly about the need for non-governmental groups to get more involved in cancer research (which I think is even more necessary now given the billions being poured into the financial sector). So, I think that World Community Grid is compatible with Stand Up 2 Cancer, even though WCG came first and is engaged in more types of research.

Re: Stand Up to Cancer

Well, I guess too that the biggest reason for the program was to ask for money. Once they put the word out that you could help for "free" that would have hurt their cause. I said "free" because even if we don't send money we do pay to run our PC's 24/7. With some of these PC's that have a 500 watt PSU in them that can add up fast on a bill! Most of the time I just use my 4 laptops. I do have 1 desktop that only has a 250 PSU in it put it has 98SE on it and I read someplace that WCG does not support that OS. Plus it's too old for XP. So I use it for old programs that don't work with XP. I also run DOS on it for fun!

Re: Stand Up to Cancer

TrustedDragon, a PSU's max rating is independant of the power it actually draws. All that means is it has that much on tap, like a supercar has 500 hp that the owner can seldom use. Sometimes a larger supply's more ineffecient, which means it takes more power to get the same job done, but if the PC only needs 150 watts total (not something a computer can tell you), then it's not like 350 are getting sent somewhere else. So you take the 150, then divide it by the efficiency percentage of the supply (a 70% efficient supply would mean you divide by .7), and then you get what's coming out of your outlet. In that case you'd be pulling 214 watts.

I run 4 pc's in my house 24/7 and my electric bill went up less than $10 a month if I remember correct. 2 are laptops, 2 are desktops, one desktop has a 350W PSU, the other a 400W. I haven't taken the time to see what's actually coming out of the wall, but don't really mind since I know the good cause it's for.

Cheers,
