October 2008 Research Update

Hello World Community Grid members,

The October 2008 research update for HCC is ready:

http://www.cs.utoronto.ca/~juris/WCG/UPDATE-OCT2008.pdf

Your donations of CPU time have collectively generated over half a terabyte of computed results. We're working our way through all of it, gaining insights into the data, and following leads that will accelerate the remaining computations.

Thank you very much for your contributions.

Re: October 2008 Research Update

I definitely appreciate the update. It's great to know what progress is being made, and how much is being made.

I do have a question about the update. It states, "To date 79,761 results were returned...", but if you look at the latest stats, it shows that over 24 Million results have been returned. I do expect a gap between the published update and current stats, and I do realize that the stats include all work units needed to reach a quorum (usually 2, from what I've seen). I'm wondering why do those result numbers differ by a factor of 300? Do we have to crunch and verify 150 work units for 1 result on the research side?

Re: October 2008 Research Update

Each object was lighted in many different ways to produce 94,000,000 images (mentioned in the update) in quorum 2, so theoretically 190,000,000 including failed tasks. From the first select set the scientists hope to determine which ranges are most interesting re "and following leads that will accelerate the remaining computations."

Re: October 2008 Research Update

Thank you for pointing out that odd number, Col323. We get the results back from the Grid in batches of 1536, corresponding to the individual photographs of wells in a 1536-well plate. I just checked our results: so far, we have received back 7171 such batches, amounting to 11,014,656 individual results. Your quorum=2 sounds about right.

I do have a question about the update. It states, "To date 79,761 results were returned...", but if you look at the latest stats, it shows that over 24 Million results have been returned.

I'll have to check as to how that 79,761 number got there. I believe we may have grabbed a number from the wrong column in one of our spreadsheets -- 79,761 results subjected to a certain analysis step, rather than the total count of results returned.

Re: October 2008 Research Update

Thank you for your response. Things make a lot more sense. As a cruncher I love to see quantifiable progress, and understanding how to measure it on my own keeps me more involved and encouraged. I also greatly appreciate the further explanation of the results gathering process. There are so many projects out there clamoring for our cycles. Being able to glean information really helps us realize that we're not wasting cycles, and even understand how this project may compliment another. (And maybe draw more people into crunching!)

Thanks for all the work you and your lab do.
