or i mean, how do i turn off hyperthreading? does that have to do with boinc, or my PC itself.

It has to do with your own PC. You need to access the BIOS. There you should see a setting for it.

Thanks. I turned it off, computer recognizes one processor, the higher percentage one appears to run much faster now. I clicked update before i restarted computer, and when i booted it up, it was still at the correct percentages. Maybe thats all it needed.
Is there anytime, any programs, where having hyperthreading off is a real problem. |

Before touching the BIOS you might try first to tell Boinc to run only one task at a time.
----------------------------------------Update your profile on the website as follows. In the Processor usage section enter On multiprocessors, at most use: 1 processor On multiprocessors, use: 50 % of processors then Save (at the bottom of the page) and last, from the Advanced view of BoincMgr, select the Projects tab, select WCG and click the Update button. Boinc will pause one of the running tasks until the other one completes. If it is enough to avoid restarts you will keep the benefit of hyperthreading for your normal work (and for Boinc as well). You might also choose to run Rice and DDDT WUs only as they have very frequent checkpoints (every few minutes). This way when you restart (whether shutdowns or particular problems) you will lose a minimum work. And if you have no temperature problems why not set Boinc to run at 100 %? It should not bother you more than at 40 %. Cheers. Jean. |

I bumped it up to 70. |

Hyperthreading improves switching the various tasks that a computer has to run, even when you do only one thing at a time; there are the system processes, the firewall, the network, the antivirus, printing, etc...
----------------------------------------And with Boinc in the background that will help you not noticing it. Give it a try: re-enable it, make the profile changes I have given you, and set the processor time at 100 %. I still have a P4HT at 2.4 GHz, and since it has no particular problem it crunches two tasks simultaneously. When I use it (my main machine is a quad) it is often to stream some TV program and it deals with it as if it were doing only that. Cheers. Jean. |

When Boinc disturbs normal usage of a PC it is generally because there is not enough RAM (that makes the system swap memory to disk exaggerately), and in this case running it more slowly will not improve anything. If you had no problem with two simultaneous WUs you probably have no problem with your RAM size, and with one WU instead of two you should have less opportunity to be short of RAM. Especially if you choose the projects I have mentioned which also have the lowest RAM usage of all WCG projects.

so it should be able to run a firewall, an antivirus, firefox, an aim client, and be able to stream videos from my computer while at 100% ?
will do. thanks! |

-___- it reset them again. it appears the benchmarks are at the 20% for FAAH

Maybe you should try DDDT or Rice to see if it is better. Abort this FAAH WU if necessary.
----------------------------------------And if it is still the same with the smaller tasks then you will have to disable hyperthreading again, but that would be too bad. Good luck. Jean. |
