GIBA, here yesterday's stats, those with xxx having a whole or part of the website in their language:
----------------------------------------UNITED STATES 83:103:08:26:55 xxx JAPAN 20:304:16:31:20 xxx CANADA 10:125:21:27:38 xxx FRANCE 10:037:23:00:16 xxx GERMANY 9:031:11:11:22 UNITED KINGDOM 7:196:14:31:38 xxx NETHERLANDS 7:039:05:44:25 AUSTRALIA 6:301:08:57:21 xxx TAIWAN 3:243:14:39:32 ITALY 2:335:13:24:30 SWEDEN 2:159:03:09:16 CZECH REPUBLIC 2:125:05:00:28 POLAND 1:346:05:32:56 BRAZIL 1:303:00:52:55 SPAIN 1:294:11:30:11 xxx RUSSIAN FEDERATION 1:292:11:40:14 FINLAND 1:220:22:09:01 CHINA 1:184:07:10:52 xxx No opines on who should and should not have a prioritized translation, certainly not heard of there anymore being in planning. For sure the WCG admin knows what the effect is between launch dates and today to justify future projects. Proportionally, the Netherlands is seemingly the biggest cruncher on WCG, by a large distance. USA 83.3 CPU years on 350 million people = 0.25 per million NL 7 CPU years on 16.4 million people = 0.42 per million JP 20 CPU years on ~128 million people = 0.15 per million UK 7.5 CPU years on ~65 million people = 0.11 per million F 10 CPU years on ~62 million people = 0.16 per million G 9 CPU years on ~82 million people = 0.11 per million AU CPU 6.8 years on ~22 million people = 0.30 per million The rest you or someone else can figure out, to note that last Iooked half of the volunteers did not enter their home or favored country. Edit: Marked Spain as one of the also WCG supported languages.

Hi there,
Just throwing my 5 cents of thoughts into this matter: What do you say about volunteer site translation? I believe in a cause and effect relationship, such as, although Brazil is among the top countries on surfing the Internet, our working knowledge on English is limited to a very small percentage of the population. Therefore, we don't have many people effectively crunching and participating specially because many people that could effectively contribute doesn't understand English... In addition, it doesn't seem to me that much of a workload to translate WCG website to Portuguese, hence perhaps a volunteer translation effort would fit nicely. |

I really disagree with you Sekerob once your coments don't got the real point of view of this discussion. By the way, the request was adressed to WCG ADM team, directly. My apologies, but can't be afordable for us (portuguese native speakers) just sawe wrong comparisons like yours. **** We continue waiting for a WCG ADM TEAM answer our request**** ![]() *edited for intolerance**tkh ![]()

GIBA, I appreciate you really want your language to be given priority, but the reasons you give aren't sufficient to make it a special case.
World Community Grid long ago looked at the translations which would give the best coverage of the world for the least cost. I believe German and Russian are high priorities now - with Portuguese not far behind. |

Didactylos, isn't our intention have it implemented before other more important languages according WCG ADM TEAM metrics, but just that it will be implemented as soon as possible and be part of near future plans of WCG. There are a lot of inform, ation in research internet instituitions that shown Brazilians as strong users of internet and computers . Additionally, we have a lot of knowledge about Brazilians to mention that if we provide any kind of grid computing application with enough dare and consistency in our native language (portuguese), the results will appear and will be in the top ones membership usage. Just take a look at ORKUT phenomena in Brazil and for Google to understand a little bit more about what I mean with my points. ![]()

I think Flavio Bessa had the best idea yet:

WCG is after all based on the prospect of volunteers coming together to make a difference, why not let them do what they can to help get others involved? (Such as translate it into their own language to make it more convenient for their friends and family that speak a not-yet-WCG supported language?) |

why not let them do what they can to help get others involved? (Such as translate it into their own language to make it more convenient for their friends and family that speak a not-yet-WCG supported language?) This is perfectly possible in the forum if you want. One week ago a few French participants have posted the translation of the first page of the Rese...lp Fight Childhood Cancer and it is our intention (them and me) to do it again for the future launches. It's not much but that can give an idea of what a new project is about for members who are not too easy with English. Because what you might not know is that getting one language in the pop up menu is not the end of the story. Everything new or changed needs to be translated, and currently the non-English parts of the website are updated only about once a year. You will certainly understand that WCG (IBM) cannot publish under its own name translations which are not "certified" by reliable people. That means using translation professionals committed to providing clean results, either for making the translation from scratch or for checking that translated texts which would come from volunteers are OK, which means probably about the same in terms of time and cost. In forums you are publishing under your name(s), and as long as nobody reports that your translation is pathetic or, worse, a nasty joke, then it is OK for WCG. Give it a try... Jean. Edit: Removed something too colloquial... ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by JmBoullier at Mar 22, 2009 6:11:00 AM] |
