Any rewards to the Grid members for their contribution ?

Hi all,

Does the WCG group plan for any rewards program to the Grid members for their contribution ?

I guess this will be the carrot for the horse..

What say ... ?

regards,

Ravisankar

its meant to be a donation. You already get one reward: the knowledge that you have done something to help the world.

Re: Any rewards to the Grid members for their contribution ?

This topic is one of several entry points to the 9 circles of forum heck WCG can't afford to give any inducements (1) because they don't make any money (2) from the work we do and because they don't engage in any fundraising (3).

IBM seems to favor organic growth (4) over rapid expansion. These decisions relate to their philosophy (5) of how such a project should be run.

These are the only related topics I could think of off the top of my head but I'm sure there are more.

Personally, I think it would be a good idea if the project were a little more glitzy and at least took donations, but it just isn't going to happen. And to be fair, there are good arguments on both sides of all these issues. They're just not our call to make.

edited for inappropriate language...cih
note: replaced **** with heck to fix problem with inappropriate language.

To my own mind, we already do get rewarded - by the knowledge that we're contributing to progress science via donating our spare computer cycles. The main evidence of this for the vast majority of people, are the badges that they're proud to display - saying that they've contributed (or rather, their computer has contributed - we get the easy part of the equation), x hours of spare CPU towards y project.

I guess there might be some link to print the certificate of computation

If not on this site - you can get a cross-project certificate on your account page of another project

Re: Any rewards to the Grid members for their contribution ?

the money cannot be given, but the users can be rewarded!

IBM is a global company...as a global company it has offices in most of the countries in the world...so it could give "discount" for their products to the members which use WCG!
it is on IBM to decide which products (hardware, software or both) are for eligible for discount!

that would also boost the sales for the IBM...and the "crunchers" would be rewarded for their contribution!

Re: Any rewards to the Grid members for their contribution ?

WCG I think (will let someone else confirm) is a separate entity that happens to be funded by IBM. But for some that may be a distinction without a difference.

Anyway, you can be rewarded for your contribution with downloading bandwidth from Easynews. If you join their team, they give you a certain amount of bandwidth depending on how much work you do.

There's a little more info here. It seems you get 1 gig of bandwidth for every 15 days of cpu time.
