Evening all
My family had little experience of the armed forces. My father and one of the younger uncles were in reserved occupations and the youngest uncle spent most of the time in West Africa as the engineer on a motor boat unit. My Wife's father was a professional soldier in the Life Guards and spent most of his time in the Middle East. However, I still think National Service was a good thing. At least we were left with some knowledge of what it meant to be in the Army or Air Force and the chance to meet and get to know men from areas you'd not normally bump into. And, I found I enjoyed square bashing, so much so that I was selected as a member of the Guard of Honour, when in the Isle of Man, to receive an AVM visit. It's not much different from the amateur theatre I was also keen on. When the timing is absolutely right there's a big endroline rush. |

Did my bit on the parade ground too, although I was Navy Commando, I ended up fighting in the desert with a company of Marines, I was later commissioned and ended my days as a captain! Not bad for a boy from Essex !

I read the article, Den linked to with great interest. It was easy for me to do as it is in Norwegian
- poor, poor Edwardians, now you have to study Norwegian For a great part it dealt with the authorities holding back information about the deaths of 40 out of 47 men who went out to do away with the Rjukan heavy water plant. My comment on Facebook where Den linked, goes like this: This is very interestering, Den. It is really hard to understand why the authorities were not more forthcoming, and I think the Lieutenant's father's frustration must have been shared by all who tried to obtain information. Why make a gentleman like him so bitter? What can justify that? The Lieutenant was the leader of the mission, and his father fought at Gallipoli in 1915. |
