Re: SeriousCrunchers Attempting Re-Entry

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3wUmtCnC4k

From what I have heard
Ribbit is from Hollywood A director wanted Frog noises for a film ( dont ask why?)
He sent the sound man out and he came back with the sound we have all heard in the Movies I say we have all heard it Because it became a stock sound bite for all Jungle/swamp/froggy locations.
BUT The Frog-ola-gists Said that the sound was of a frog only found in the scrub land near the studios never in any other place !!!

So thats the sound we love

To Make sure there is no doubt about The Sound Being RIBBIT RIBBIT RIBBIT nothing less.
This recording by a keen naturalist confirms this without doubt

Re: SeriousCrunchers Attempting Re-Entry

Thank you very, very much for solving a major problem for me.
Yes, I shall admit to frogs emitting 'ribbet' like sounds
- inflexible, rigid me; as soon as I let go of my childhood wisdom it was easy to hear with your sound example.
densnaps constantly to the rescue!
tongue
So, what does densnaps mean, please?

Re: SeriousCrunchers Attempting Re-Entry

Morning Lm Happy to be of assistance
I wasnt aware that Frogs could be so vocal until a few years ago I moved to The Romney Marsh in Kent.

this is an area of low flat wet lands that was drained and has many Dykes to keep it drained ( they Grow TULIPS there ) much like Holland .Any way in the Dykes there are residing FROGS

The marsh frog or Laughing Frog These very loud frogs kept me awake on my first night on the marsh.
I thought they were ducks so loud was the sound But at Night??? I found out that they were introduced in 1932 at a place called Stone In Oxney on the marsh and rapidly spread to populate the entire Marsh.

The Marsh is known as "The Sixth Continent" Romney Marsh, once called by Rudyard Kipling in Puck of Pook'€™s Hill as the €œSixth Continent€ due to the wide expanse of levels with their special privileges and customs, did indeed for centuries regard itself as quite distinct from the rest of the world. The territory of infamous smuggling gangs and numerous sheep farmers, dotted with ancient medieval church towers, tending to sag at strange angles into the marshland, Romney Marsh still manages today to retain its withdrawn, haunting beauty.

The Marsh is a weird place, in autumnal times of year with its close proximity to the sea the mists hang over the dykes providing cover for Smugglers.In the mid 1700's an infamous group known as the Hawkhurst gang used to meet in an inn in Rye just off the marsh ( the marsh being flat & reclaimed from the sea ends in cliffs that rise up to start the mainland) There Sits Rye & Winchelsea In the town of Rye there is this Inn Named "The Mermaid"

Smuggler's Song by Rudyard Kipling

If you wake at midnight, and hear a horse’s feet,
Don’t go drawing back the blind, or looking in the street.
Them that ask no questions isn’t told a lie.
Watch the wall, my darling, while the Gentlemen go by!
Five and twenty ponies,
Trotting through the dark—
Brandy for the Parson,
‘Baccy for the Clerk;
Laces for a lady, letters for a spy,
And watch the wall, my darling, while the Gentlemen go by!

Running round the woodlump if you chance to find
Little barrels, roped and tarred, all full of brandy-wine,
Don’t you shout to come and look, nor use ’em for your play.
Put the brishwood back again—and they’ll be gone next day!

If you see the stable-door setting open wide;
If you see a tired horse lying down inside;
If your mother mends a coat cut about and tore;
If the lining’s wet and warm—don’t you ask no more!

If you meet King George’s men, dressed in blue and red,
You be carefull what you say, and mindful what is said.
If they call you “pretty maid,” and chuck you ’neath the chin,
Don’t you tell where no one is, nor yet where no one’s been!

Knocks and footsteps round the house—whistles after dark—
You’ve no call for running out till the house-dogs bark.
Trusty’s here, and Pincher’s here, and see how dumb they lie—
They don’t fret to follow when the Gentlemen go by!

If you do as you’ve been told, ‘likely there’s a chance,
You’ll be given a dainty doll, all the way from France,
With a cap of Valenciennes, and a velvet hood—
A present from the Gentlemen, along o’ being good!
Five and twenty ponies,
Trotting through the dark—
Brandy for the Parson,
‘Baccy for the Clerk;
Them that asks no questions isn’t told a lie—
Watch the wall, my darling, while the Gentlemen bo by!

Re: SeriousCrunchers Attempting Re-Entry

I must say you create some very interesting posts covering a lot of aspects. I googled Romney Marsh, and choosing a picture of a map this
http://www.dungeness-nnr.co.uk/
came up. I see you are not all that far from the White Cliffs of Dover and the other ferry port to the continent:
Folkstone to the NE, and Hastings not far away to the SW all of these places having cliffs or slopes dropping into the Channel.
Does Romney Marsh sit inland with some high ground protecting it from the surf and tide?
There was an interesting picture and piece of information about
Dungeness being "one of the best examples of a shingle beach". I never heard of that before.
Would that mean that miles and miles of beach constists not of sand but "rolling stones"?
Have you gotten used to the Laughing Frog calling our his ribbet by now?
Besides, what does densnaps mean?
Thank you for your post. rose
coffee coffee - it's tea for two!.

Re: SeriousCrunchers Attempting Re-Entry

Okay tea for Two it is......

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WcASyXqZfA&feature=related

Dungeness: The point sticks out into the sea as you can see from the map it is a shingle bank that builds up, shingle being removed by the tide from one side & deposited on the other. From the top of the Lighthouse or the power station roof looking out to sea the formation can be clearly seen as ridges rather like the rings on a tree.The migration of shingle is such that the Lifeboat station situated on the Folkstone side of the point had to be moved forwards to allow launching of the lifeboat on a regular basis this after extending the launch ramp as far as possible. It would seem that this Launch difficulty has been cured now by launching from a carriage . The crew used to be made up from fishing families. Two Fishing families to be correct If your name wasn't Tart Or Oiler you didn't get on the boat.
The Channel at this point is extremely busy with the ferry ports of Dover And Folkstone just up the coast.A shipping movement in or out of Dover every six minutes there is also the coastal traffic this is supposed to observe strict lane discipline with vessels heading north east keeping to the English side those travelling the other way stick to the French coast as the two are around 21 miles apart at this point you can guess lane discipline is poor
the many huge oil tankers and container vessels are okay its the smaller coastal ships that duck and weave
sad

Well ,These are completely unique photos Many people might have a sticker such as the orange one here.and have stood quite safely on the Pile cap of a running reactor
So Whats with the odd B&W shots?
Well taken nearly 45 years ago during in pile inspection after a years running heaven knows what Elf and safety at work people would do if such work was conducted now

Alive and kicking, was a great event, small friendly themed event with medieval stuff everywhere- swords, dragons, castles, armour, mead, and a spread that would make Friar Tuck faint. (I am still stuffed!)

Just recovering now coffee , and another busy day opening presents and visiting with guests that have travelled to spend this special time with us.

Congratulations and cheers to your better half! Glad to know the knot is safely tied, even if we weren't there to supervise.
