Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 34 smilesmile

I can't wait till my 8800's get here. This GPU crunching looks pretty cool. Too bad WGC doesn't have it yet - seems like it would really help them out.

Oh yeah - I saw esoteric17 fly by me today. Talk about some serious crunching! biggrin

Esoteric is a BEAST on WCG, but here's a secret, I actually get more boinc credits per day because of GPU crunching. Your 2 8800GTs should produce about 12k-14k ppd (points per day) together, or about the same as my 260 GTX. If you were to oc your 8800GT (VERY DOABLE!) you might see more like 14k - 15k ppd. You're right to recognize the power of parallel processing. When WCG gets GPU processing, that's when the computer power available in the grid begins to expand rapidly as people start to connect their GPUs to the grid.

I have a 260 in my main computer - it even has it's own power supply! I want to bring it on the GPU grid, but I want to try it out on these 8800's first. I got the 260 when it was new, so I paid a lot of money for it and until I can see how this works I really don't want to burn up my flag ship video card.

I'm not sure how the CPU and GPU crunching gets along on the same computer, too. So, I'm just going to start slow before my electricity bill gets any worse than it already is.

Well, we have the same cards. And so does/did Blizzie. So we're here for support. I would run the GPU machines with only 1 cpu core on if you're worried about stability/heat. Also, the loss of one processor core is nothing when you add a GPU.

Thanks for the info. I'm downloading the CUDA driver right now and might give this machine a shot at it.
Does SETI have GPU processing going on right now? Those wu's are huge and take like 60 hours to complete!

yes, but apparently it's pretty dodgy. I'd avoid it for now. I would stick with GPU GRID where we've all had success.

Okay - Thanks smile

Just FYI, when I say dodgy, I mean it runs part GPU part CPU, and apparently there's no way to know which one its going to use. DM had a hard time even getting a GPU WU, despite clearing his queue. GPUGRID has great tech support and really surprisingly stable releases. I've actually NEVER had GPUGRID or BOINC crash on me!

Anyone else have suggesstions for BOINC client? 6.6.0 is horrible.. if the internet doesn't work it won't crunch. I lost a day of crunching........

Yeah. Make sure to check your SETI preferences. By default, it allows CPU and GPU crunching (look for the option 'allow GPU if available'... so as soon as I updated to allow CUDA I immediately got 20 SETI GPU work units.. eep!

Oh, and I've signed up to GPU Grid.. but the three tasks I've had have all instantly come up with computation error (i've suspended crunching on it for now). I've heard it can occurs on overclocked cards. My card is factory overclocked.. Is there anything I can do to fix the error?

I have nine machines on 6.6.0 and never had such a problem. I think they are on 6.6.17 now. Take your pick. I stopped testing at 6.6.0.

EDIT: 6.6.20 is the current alpha ... but that was 10 minutes ago ... 6.6.21 may be out now. laughing biggrin laughing

First check messages and see that BOINC reconized the card. It should say something like CUDA device found: 9800GT

Factory OC'ed cards can be a problem if it is extreme. You can use EVGA Precission to down clock it to original spec's.

What error message did you get on those wu's?

wink I've only got one GPU crunching. I bought an ATI card before Folding@home released the nVidia client and before I heard of GPUGRID. I am going to get an nVidia card soon.

@Chris: Thank you again for the Ambient Weather info! The machine now runs @ 100% with much less memory usage and paging. smile

Don't forget join MOT at these other projects when you start crunching (CPU or GPU) there. You will want to attach to the project with the same email id you used here. Once you do that, go into your account and set your username to match what you're using here too. That seems to ensure that places like BOINCStats track your credits together for all the projects you crunch at.

Hypothetically you could declock it, but it sounds like the card may have an error. Blizzie, any ideas? I was going to recommend ATI TOOL to find out if the card has lots of artifacts.
