Re: Humble Suggestion

Cling wrap, plastic bags- that you get for free

A Plastic Bag is NOT a Solar Panel!

Perhaps in some mad scientist head it could be, and perhaps it may be one day, but today it is not that day!

Oh, and they just give you the plastic bags to get rid of you.
You have already given them your money - next please, cha-ching!

Re: Humble Suggestion

Checked out that site, for $500 for 20 watts, that's $25/watt! I just turned down a $10M project to put PV panels on a bunch of our buildings at work. Instead I'm using that money to reroof these buildings, replace indoor plumbing with low flow fixtures and all lights with energy efficient T-8 fluorescent tubes with electronic ballasts. I did a cost benefit analysis and the cost out weighed any benefit. It would take 50+ years to recoup the costs and by that time, the pv module's warranty had expired. I used to think we should get into solar panels but not anymore. The cheapest way is to conserve energy.

THE CHEAPEST WAY IS TO CONSERVE ENERGY !!!

What are the typical prizes per watt in a solar panel?

What about LED lamps?

Re: Humble Suggestion

keiko01, you should have got the energy efficient lighting years ago.

You present a false dichotomy. You should get the energy efficient fixtures, and the solar panels.

If they take 50 years to pay for themselves, you are being ripped off.

Re: Humble Suggestion

keiko01, I have been using CFL for over a decade now. Sadly, though, I don't have $10M to invest in solar energy.

From my reading, a good PV setup should break even in about 20 years, although of course this is dependant on the available sunlight, and the local cost of electricity. You would be justified in factoring in the projected future increase in electricity cost, too.

Could I be more energy efficient? Probably.

Should you put energy efficiency before investing in renewables? Absolutely. I was just objecting to the way you presented your argument, giving it as a reason not to invest in renewables. You should, if you can, do both.

Re: Humble Suggestion

And once you have reduced your electricity needs with your improvements you also need less solar panels to provide it. smile

Re: Humble Suggestion

I believe just like computers, solar panels will take the same road. From big computers filling a room to now having more power then they could Imagen back in the day sitting on my lap. Computer chips have become smaller every year, more powerful, and more efficient. now about the market thats different. Nike shoes cost 5 cents to make but sell for 100$ sounds like a profit, if the demand is their you can sell it at any price until you hit a top price that people will bare. i don't want to replace solar panels , just want them efficient. maybe a little thing the size of my hand or smaller that i can stick anywhere to charge anything like my car. I think we should make organic battery's that don't make waste or use harmful things. Making solar panels also make alot of waste to the point that it is pollutive, so... maybe biodegradable ones could be nice. thanks my 2 cents.
