Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 35 smilesmile

As usual, nVidia came out with another version, yesterday. It's now 185.85...

When I got up this morning I really did not plan to do drivers on 9 machines. I have everything on 185.85 now. nVida is getting to be like BOINC ... all we ask is a release per day. wink

Good day of crunching MOT! coffee

I have to do three machines and that's bad enough! Can't imagine doing 9.
And you have a silver badge on the pig flu already! I'm still waiting for my bronze! lol WTG

Edit - I'm changing my profiles for a little while wink

BY the way, great day in BOINC STATS for you, something like 38k! Most of it GPU, I suppose. biggrin

Thanks!
I think it was. I gave my son my 260, and he loves that card with Halo 2. I finally convinced him to exit the game in the morning and I noticed his computer completed 4 wu's today instead of none! GPUGrid doesn't run too well with a game like Halo 2 running as well.

Edit - Nothing like DM's 70K, though! laughing

Good morning MOT. coffee
Most all of my GPU wu's once again failed last night. I'm shutting down the cards until they get it fixed. I was going to have to back off anyway as our nice cool weather is ending.
I do like the new project here though. Nice and smooth so far.
Looks like I have a date with the lawn tractor today. All this rain has caused rapid growth again.

Are you still O/Cing those cards? If so, try resetting them back to factory defaults and see if the wu's start completing.

That’s not the problem. The problem is they changed their science app and it is not working on older cards. Constantly searching for “today’s” working BOINC release and ‘today’s” working nVidia driver is not a solution for me. A much easier solution for me is one click on “No New Tasks” and my problem goes away completely.
I am detecting an attitude over there that since they are the “only game in town”, their users will put up with anything. Maybe so ... maybe no. I have an easy solution that works for me.
What set me off this morning is their begging for money in their main news feed:

Donate to GPUGRID
May 7, 2009
GPUGRID is now accepting donations from users who want to contribute further. We do accept either hardware or monetary donations. Monetary donations have a minimum of 1 Euro and can be done using a Credit/Debit card or via Bank Transfer. Many thanks to all of you considering a donation.

What next? Shall we buy a license and pay a fee for the privilege of doing work for them? I would rather do work for organizations like WCG and YoYo (and others) who very much appreciate the efforts of their users and do not treat them as indentured servants.

Sorry I am having a PMS moment today!!! I think I will go out and mow the corrals. biggrin

I'm sorry to hear your experience, DM, but I don't think you should despair. These organizations are run by people who are fallible, weak, and often inconsiderate. While they might be doing good work, they might get arrogant, as it seems they have. Once other groups release GPU clients, and remember, F@H is ALWAYS a valid alternative, GPUGRID is going to have to get their you-know-what together before their user base starts to migrate to other projects. In the meantime, forgive and forget, and realize that regardless of their arrogance, good work is being done.

GPUGrid is amply funded ... especially by nVida, EVGA and some other companies who stand to make good profits selling us our tools of the trade. I cut them NO slack. devilish It is different for small projects at universities that are run on a shoestring by a part-time professor and two very overworked grad students. GPUGrid is not that!! Beside, as with IBM, I am an equity holder in nVidia and, as such, expect better of them. wink
Remember Cosmology? Their first science was written by two astronomy students with a “background” in computing. I’m not sure which video game that ‘background” came from but their initial results were quite bad. Two of their talented crunchers rewrote, fixed and optimized the code for them. That’s the real spirit of the DC world.
Really now? Do you think “Cindy Lou” with her pretty pink laptop, who wants to end all world hunger by prom night, is going to spend much time pondering the nuances between 6.6.20 and 6.6.24? Or whether 182.50 is a better driver than 183.83? Oh, and which combination of those is better for 64-bit vs. 32-bit technologies? No ... I think Cindy is going to be more interested in the 11 text messages she received from her boyfriend in the last 15 minutes. But it is the “Cindy’s” of the world, which want to save the world, that will make GPU crunching successful. It’s not just for us nerds.
The problem is that there are too many people f***ing around with the code and real testing has gone the way of the dinosaur. Until it is pre-packaged and plug-and-play like CPU, GPU crunching will stay largely in the realm of arrogant nerds ( biggrin like me biggrin ) and gamers that have not left the chair in their darkened bedroom for over a month. I want “Cindy” in on the action as there lies success.
They will get it fixed over at GPUGrid eventually and all I have to do is click on “Allow New Tasks” to be back in the action.

*****
@Jonathan: I got the shipping notification. Thanks! I may put it to use at Folding although I am not too keen on running a separate app outside of BOINC.

I mowed the corrals and did some weeding in the garden today. Still I had time to sit in the shade under my favorite Oak and watch the chickens chase bugs and listen to the dogs make “happy dog sounds” while they rolled on their backs in the newly mowed grass. What better therapy is there than that on a beautiful Friday afternoon? peace
