Size and Scope of project

I would find it helpful if, in the initial announcement posted to the forum, a general explanation were provided on the number of work units that are expected to be crunched and therefore a general number of years that the project was expected to run.

I hope that Sekerob will be adding a graph to his fabulous work, but it can take some time before the work unit volume is high enough to reliably extrapolate either a volume or end date. The Techs have to know by now the first question that any cruncher wants answered is how does the size of the new project compare to the size of the existing projects. Don't the scientists already know the expected number of WU to be created for the project?

Re: Size and Scope of project

Hello astrolab,
From the project description:
to develop new drugs that inhibit neuraminidase (N1, N2, etc), NS1 protein, hemagglutinin, and possibly other targets that influenza needs to spread in the body.

So the total number of targets that we will try to dock drugs onto is not fixed. The influenza virus offers many possible targets. With time the project scientists will decide which targets to pursue. Right now at the start of the project, it is undetermined.

Re: Size and Scope of project

I think it would be good to announce an expected minimum runtime though, or a size comparison to another running project. In any case this project will probably draw a lot of badge hunters at the start. Knowing the project will run a long time might dampen that peak a bit.

Re: Size and Scope of project

World Community Grid has never published firm estimates of runtimes, purely because estimates are so unreliable.

World Community Grid won't even have internal estimates until the project has run for a while. (Yes, there is an estimate before that, but it's for planning purposes only.)

Opposed to other start up projects, a note by uplinger says this was (immediately) given Normal Weight... big supply thus and given the Research pages speak of millions of compounds, probably the same sets as used for the other AutoDock projects, you can guesstimate how long this will run with other 8 sciences to choose from by end of month.

No redundancy biggrin
So many projects, so few computers to crunch with...

The reason I started this post was that I could not guess the size, so let me ask the question in a different way. If the number of tasks projected for FA@H is a 10 and the number of tasks for CEP is a 0, what number between 0 and 10 (using only even numbers) is a guesstimate of the number of tasks for IADS?

We really, honestly, absolutely do not know.

If you want to guess, why don't you make your own guess?

Re: Size and Scope of project

So, how much did you guys pay to time the release with the recent "Swine Flu" outbreak? :)

All kidding aside, nice to see another worthy project to the list.

Re: Size and Scope of project

Well I'm glad someone posted a screenshot of the running application, since nowhere in the announcement or the FAQ said who or what was behind it.

FYI saw UTMB in the screenshot and am assuming it's University of Texas Medical Branch, same as DDDT's sponsor.

Also the FAQ has a section on how to keep from catching influenza but nearly all of the information pertains to stopping the spread, not how to prevent catching it. For instance my washing my hands after I sneeze or staying home when I'm sick won't help ME from catching the flu...
