applause The Stable WCG

I would just like to say that I checked each of the systems I have on the WCG and there are No Errors for any system.
This includes the WCG platform, Boinc and running the following different operating systems:
XP 32bit, Vista 32bit and Vista 64bit, 2003 Server 32bit and 2008 server 64bit

Well done.

I have had substantial displeasure recently when trying to contribute to several other projects, most notably Aqua and MilkyWay and especially with their inept attempts at utilising CUDA. Should the WCG decide to add this pathway please make sure the additional project is fully functional prior to general release – Do the Alpha, Beta, Pre-release and limited public release prior to general release.

Thanks for taking the correct approach.

Re: The Stable WCG

WCG takes great pride in DIRFT [and nobody is perfect]. Difference with WCG, full production, and other projects operating under the Alpha label for months, some years, it will maybe need the set up of a separate Alpha testing segment, so volunteers do not get volunteered without expressly joining any GPU crunch testing.

We've had some back room discussion on this, such as the WCG client package default disabling GPU functions. Think some of that is already included in the 6.6-6.10 clients put out by Berkeley at WCG's request.

Interesting times ahead.

Re: The Stable WCG

When we have a GPU app running and when we adopt a BOINC client capable of running a GPU application, we will implement a policy that requires the user to take explicit action to enable the use of the GPU.

Currently the NVIDIA drivers do not have capabilities that volunteer computing relies on such as setting process priorities or virtual memory. As a result, if the BOINC client starts running an application that runs inside the GPU it will impact the user experience on the computer. I purchased a CUDA enabled graphics card and started running the Seti@Home GPU app. It caused noticeable delays in screen updates.

Until there is a way for the NVIDIA drivers (or ATI down the road) to better manage this situation, this will be an opt-in item.

We've had some back room discussion on this, such as the WCG client package default disabling GPU functions. Think some of that is already included in the 6.6-6.10 clients put out by Berkeley at WCG's request.

<no_gpus> is part of the <options> in cc_config.xml, since WCG supplies a customized file it's possible to include this if it's really desired...

The BOINC-defaults (client and preferences) is to only run GPU then idle, so users won't see any performance-impacts except if they've explisitely changed this. Also, for all projects with GPU-application (except GPUGRID for obvious reasons...) there's a preference to enable/disable using the GPU.

Neither of these options was available then SETI@home released their 1st. GPU-application in December, but it's included in v6.6.xx, and "only use GPU then idle" is part of standard-BOINC-web-setup.

Now, since WCG uses customized web-pages must enable these options yourself, but wouldn't expect one more or less preference should be a problem.

Making a GPU-application that gives a significant speedup and don't constantly crash is the hard part...
