Just got my sapphire.. Congratulations, first!Next, don't worry: when you reach the "new badge level" that you wish it will have been announced for a while, most probably. New levels will be tougher and tougher to reach... Keep on crunching! Jean. |

Before going to a new level on top of the atmosphere, you can crunch to have a jewel box full of blue gemstones. The other projects are jealous not to have reached the sky (Sapphire)

Your first emerald it seems. Excellent
----------------------------------------![]() ![]() I do fully agree with you. i7 is the way to go. The best CPU. For a long time AMD did better but now with this design Intel has let AMD in the dust. I hope AMD will come back with better designs as we need competition if we want to keep prices low. ![]() |

For crunching purposes, i7 definitely head and shoulders above the P2. But for mainstream use, the differences are relatively minor.
Since most people don't buy machines for crunching, there's no need to worry about the prices getting out of hand. |

Yeah, the market is miles away from perfect competition, also more than two major chip-producers would definitely be good for the customers.
With my old single-core computer it took me more than two years to reach the gold badgets, one result per day was normal, two were already good (about 12 hours, I switch my machine off at night). With my i7 920 mildly overclocked to 3,2Ghz about 25 HCC results per day are normal ![]() I would buy it again immediately! |

apogiffa never switch the machine off at night. I give you here some hints why:
----------------------------------------1) A full day has 24 hours and not 12. You loose 50% of your crunching capability. ![]() 2) You also loose some excellent mild heating in your room in winter time. ![]() 3) The air in your room will stay stagnant. With your PC you have excellent air circulation. Btw I have five 120mm fans in each of my crunchers. ![]() 4) The low frequency humming noise is excellent for relaxation after a stressfull day. It will allow you to sleep like a baby ![]() ![]() ![]() 5) Switching your computer on and off is the worst thing to do. I can feel from here his pain. This type of brutal event is electrically and thermo-mechanically terrible. Your PC goes from hot to cold and hot again every day twice. Voltages and currents spike around the PC's nervous system. The CPU, power unit, all components are submitted to an awful stress. Keep it running non stop, and your PC will reach a steady state nice temperature and hum along forever. Do not forget to dust-off from time to time. ![]() ![]() |

Haha, these are very good reasons to let my machine also crunch at night.
![]() ![]() Is it really better for the computer to let it run constantly than switching it off every day? My temperatures are around 60, should be still in the green.. |

In principle and in very general terms a thermal and electrical steady state is better than abrupt changes to these parameters.
----------------------------------------Now if you switch twice a day that is nothing. Modern power supplies have protections over spikes, overvoltages, micro power cuts. Condensators are of much higher capacity and can absorb long and important variations. Just to have an idea, check the power led on the power supply how long it stays on, even after you have pressed the main power switch off (not the PC power switch). The electronic components and integrated circuits on board today are much better protected (and better designed) then 25 or more years ago. So you can switch off before going to sleep and be happy. ![]() |
