I Wish there was a way for us to Merge computers that we know are the same so it would show the correct number of PC we have on WCG.
I have 8 PC's that at one time or another were or still running WCG. However over time they have been reformated/renamed or detached and re-atached to the point where I now show 15 PC's! (last time I looked). I am sure I am not the only one. By Merging it would show the correct number and I think it would help you to lower the size of your database. |

That's been requested several times. I don't think that could happen though since a new installation gives a new ID to the client.
There have been suggestions such as filtering and showing only active clients but who knows where that'll go. I don't worry about it myself. My page shows 42 installations as of this time, but I only have maybe 6 active machines at this time. |

There are other BOINC projects that will let you merge PC's that are the same but were given another ID. In those cases the "new" one is added to the old and the old ID is then active. On the other hand I could be wrong... I'v been wrong many times! ![]() |

Part of the "reinstall, use old ID" has been automated by WCG [see Start Here FAQ for details], but wence all files have been deleted or not used by the new install when first connecting, it's very hard to say "is the new the same as an old". As of yet not seen the manual facilitation of "merging hosts" being scheduled for implementation. If at all, look for posts by knreed on the topic. I found one with our improved search tool, from 2005
----------------------------------------![]() http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...=0&sort=1&rows=20 Personally it does not interest me too much, but would it exist, I'd certainly try to get as many off the dropped off list as possible. Think I'm on 22 devices ;P edit: PS, I've done this on other projects and it's not perfect. It needs to be done rather sooner than later. Have several off still active devices that I've been unable to merge due "hosts not the same" or similar, though they are same device and OS.

Over here at WCG, deleting a device results in the sum of the historically registered devices no longer adding up to the global member's total for points, results and run time. How that would work out at an of the box BOINC projects is anybody's guess. Total credit not equal the sum of the individual devices would be mine.
----------------------------------------The Device Statistics page at WCG filters on the device statistics page, only showing those having contributed in recent weeks. A different approach in showing 'active' devices.

If so your points would drop and it would have been as if you never got them. As far as merging the PC that has to be done as soon as you attach to the project if I remember, been a while since I've had to do it. Normally I reformat the PC's that gets used the most once a year to get a clean install and clear out all the trash. One PC that I will be doing is one that has had errors this month on the Rice project. That will take place in Dec/Jan timeframe. |

I would think that deleting a host would also remove the points/credits that host has made... wouldn't it? No, when awarding credit, the same credit is added to user.total_credit, host.total_credit, and team.total_credit (if user currently part of a team). Deleting a host has no effects on user.total_credit and team.total_credit. As far as merging the PC that has to be done as soon as you attach to the project if I remember, been a while since I've had to do it. It's no problem waiting some time before doing this... But, if you're example using host-id-#123, gets a new host-id-#456, and afterwards restores a backup-copy and makes a connection with host-id-#123, you can't merge them... Normally I reformat the PC's that gets used the most once a year to get a clean install and clear out all the trash. One PC that I will be doing is one that has had errors this month on the Rice project. That will take place in Dec/Jan timeframe. Well, every time I'm doing a OS-(re)-install, and this isn't very frequent, I've got a tendency to have one or more partially-run CPDN-models, so just nuking everything and starting with a clean BOINC-install isn't really an option. ![]() ![]() "I make so many mistakes.
