Greetings,
If you are going to install the BOINC agent using the Package manager please follow these steps. This is for 9.10 of Ubuntu but may apply to other versions of Ubuntu. (Note: These instructions are only for the GUI version of BOINC. I can give the command line version if needed). 1. Install boinc-client and boinc-manager via the Package Manager in your Systems -> Administration menu at the top. 2. After these install, please go to Applications -> System Tools -> BOINC Manager 3. Follow the steps for setting up your agent. It will require your user name and password you use on the website. When it asks for project, type in http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org 4. Next download the ca-bundle.crt from BOINC. BOINC does not work with World Community Grid without this file. You will get these type of errors if you do not do these next steps. Thu 29 Oct 2009 04:50:11 PM CDT|World Community Grid|Scheduler request failed: Peer certificate cannot be authenticated with known CA certificates Download Link -> http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/browser/trunk/.../ca-bundle.crt?format=raw This should download to your "/home/<user>/Downloads/" directory as ca-bundle.crt. 5. Open up a terminal. Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal 6. Copy the ca-bundle.crt to the correct location. sudo cp Downloads/ca-bundle.crt /var/lib/boinc-client/ 7. Go back to your agent and press update to get it to talk with the servers again. It will try to talk after a few minutes if you don't press update. BOINC should be working after these steps. Hope this helps, -Uplinger |

Sorry, I must have done something wrong. I'm a long time user of WCG but yesterday I did a new clean install of Karmic (9.10) and installed the BOINC agent OK. Now, the agent comes up totally empty with all the buttons greyed out and nothing happens if I try to "connect to project". Can anyone help please?
Thanks Ian |

Could you please post your message log to allow us to learn a little more about your setup and guess what you have done or not done.
----------------------------------------Also, I presume you have installed BOINC via the package manager Synaptic? Have you installed both packages, boinc-manager and boinc-client? Read you later. Jean. |

I am going to assume you installed via package manager as well. If you did so, then your logs will be in the location provided in the commands below.
cat /var/lib/boinc-client/stdoutdae.txt and cat /var/lib/boinc-client/stderrdae.txt Please copy and paste both in the forums if you can. Using these commands in the terminal may be easier since you can not see which buttons are which on the boinc manager. (To open a terminal...goto Applications -> Accesories -> Terminal) Also, do you know if you installed any other applications since installing BOINC? I assume that your agent worked and looked correct at one point. If so, my guess is that you have installed another application that has changed which WxWidgets are used and that is messing up the button calls in the boinc-manager. Please let us know what you see and we'll try our best to help. -Uplinger |

Also, as a note, my install was a fresh install using ext4 and installing both boinc-client and boinc-manager. Those are some of the first packages to get installed on my machines :)

Here is an alarming report in The Register. One in five upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 have problems. The article suggests waiting another month for bug fixes before upgrading.
