I am a former TV Sales type ...
1) I agree that a TV commercial would be helpful in rercruiting membership. If anyone at IBM is reading, the simplest way would be to use Network television in some high profile areas like sports. IBM should probably frame the message as a 'thank you" to hundreds of thousands of Crunchers, etc. They could dramatize the value of crunching. Maybe my wife would stop looking at me so tolerantly when I spend money on new gear ... maybe I could get a date for the Prom... maybe my vanilla Honda would become stylish... Oh, well .... one can always dream.. fkehoetx 2) We could make a "gift" of X number of days of computing to the Muscular Dystrophy telethon, the Children's Miracle Network telethons, and so on. This wouled tie the notion of direct participation in research processing to the larger problems of the diseases. Yes, I know these ideas would not address all of the projects on the WCG, but it would be a positive start. |

I think they would find it more beneficial by contacting organizations in similar causes that don't have DC. For example, breast cancer research. I'm sure if someone from IBM got ahold of a well known breast cancer organization, that they would contact their IT staff and start putting WCG on their office PC's for after hours use. This is something they would have in common and strike direct interest. Then contact IT depts. at many Universities that don't currently have DC projects. IBM does a lot of business with them, so why not get them on board. Most of them have computer labs that are empty a good majority of the time and many offices that don't turn off PC's. I think this would get a much better result then a TV ad for a program non-Geek types don't understand.
----------------------------------------Edit: Also keep in mind that most businesses wont want to pay for the increased electric bill that would escalate from this. Remember that with businesses, it typically is the bottom line (dollar) that makes the decision and we are in a "Green society" mindset right now. I read a few months back how an IT guy from a school got in trouble for running SETI on after hours without permission. They quoted several thousands of dollars the school had to pay in additional electric use. I think the article came out of a Networkworld issue. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Coleslaw at Apr 6, 2010 1:36:13 AM] |

The contest idea for a logo to put on bumper stickers and such is a good idea. Something we all vote on to insure we all agree on it. Myself, I use twitter allot and just about every day I post a message in regards about WCG. Also mention it to everyone I know who has a computer. Word of mouth is probably the best as we can explain it better than someone looking at the web site and getting a little confused.

Just happened on this thread. For what it is worth, the actual number of Active crunchers is about 98000 (BOINC Stats).

yes i use word of mouth alot on trying to get more people to crunch on WCG specifically but honestly if i can get them interested to crunch any distributed computing project then i am happy.
----------------------------------------for all of boinc combind (by boincstats) there are 319,865 active people worldwide with 575,663 total active computers world wide reaching a overall computer speed of 5,158.722 TeraFLOPS so there are tons of computers out there that could help and tons of people we need to try to convince to use there computers the biggest problem i can see is the "GREEN INITIATIVES" out there that people are being more energy concerned and shutting things off and conserving and now your askin them to use more. each news article helps though ![]() |
