I kept picking up Dengue WUs, so I turned down my cache down a bit, to 0.05

I have enough buffered up for my 76 cores to reach a Ruby badge...lol! Bronze came today, possibly Gold tomorrow! :D

One thing I do not know is if devices not qualifying [not highly reliable] get the A-Type line. Hi Sekerob, yes they do ![]() ![]() |

Well, for the moment, it looks as though the waterfall has run dry

Probably as a result of so many people 'hoovering' all available WU's up so as to fill their caches... Perhaps there needs to be a maximum of 2 days until the WUs are due back so these clowns can't take hundreds of them themselves. It's infuriating, on several levels, that this far into a new project there are many people complaining that they haven't been able to get any/very few WUs & on the other end there are people who've managed already to earn their ruby/emerald badges. This project's release is already a disaster, but for future projects perhaps something can be done in the early stages (where there is a MUCH greater demand for WUs) to get the WUs more evenly spread out (be it faster due dates (not allowing huge caches), a maximum number of work units at any one time per computer, etc). In the end it really shouldn't matter as nobody is getting paid to crunch anything (quite the opposite actually) & it really is all for the science. However generating this much ill will can't be a good thing if it leads to people not crunching/going elsewhere in the grid computing universe. ![]() |

Probably as a result of so many people 'hoovering' all available WU's up so as to fill their caches... Perhaps there needs to be a maximum of 2 days until the WUs are due back so these clowns can't take hundreds of them themselves. It's not really a matter of "clowns" taking hundreds. It's a matter of speed. One problem is that most of the WUs take so little time. Even a 1 day cache on most of my PCs is over 100 WUs. On my newest machine, a 1 day cache for most of the C-types is potentially 576 WUs (.5 hrs per WU x 12 threads x 24 hrs). You'd probably have to go to a 6 or 8 hour limit for the C-types to really make a difference. By doing that, many crunchers would be excluded from getting any and we'd be back to the same place. In the end, for the researchers, it is all about the results. The faster they can get them back, the better, regardless of who crunches them. |

Greg L has a point though. If Crunchers are getting upset and leavng, something should be done. Other BOINC projects limit the number of WUs a box can download in a day. It was to prevent a faulty box from downloading excessive numbers of WUs and trashing them. Works well. IMHO some modification of this feature could be used to spread the 'wealth' a bit wider and potentially return WUs faster to science....cheers
