800 years and now going digital.

The first in a new range of powerful superconductors which could revolutionise the production of machines like hospital MRI scanners and protect the national grid have been developed by engineers at the University of Cambridge. Professor David Cardwell explains what superconductors are, why we need them, and how he and his team have devised techniques to make them more powerful than ever before

Cambridge University Bravo !! and a great Channel !

If the prices are correct (From 175 Euro inc) then it looks like a much better card than the GTX465 in terms of value for money; the performance is about 3% shy of the GTX465, but it uses 50W less power at stock and should clock much higher.

skgiven, like you suspected, the performance is close to 465. One notable difference is, that 460 uses much less power than 465, so it will be also quieter. That review I referred to, also compares the meaning of the memory size of two 460 cards. In case you do more than just crunching with it.

Facebook, the popular social networking platform, has purchased Nextstop a site which provided user added lists of interesting things to do in locations around the world. During the announcement of the purchase, Nextstop stated that they would be shutting down the service on September 1. Those currently using the service have two months to continue using Nextstop and will also have the ability to export the content they created to formats such as static HTML, Google Maps or Google Picasa. The employees of Nextstop will be joining the Facebook team. Facebook has not stated what it plans to do with the product it just acquired.

"With Windows 7, running a 64-bit OS is becoming the norm."

"Most major processors in PCs today are capable of running a 64-bit OS. There are also more and more compatible devices and applications for PCs running 64-bit Windows 7," LeBlanc

Windows XP downgrade rights extended until 2020 [Updated]

Jill Lovato from the Windows PR team sent us a note to clarify a few things. Namely, that the downgrade right is specific to the EULA for Windows 7, not the tech support deadline for Windows 7 in January 2020. Customers will not be able to buy a PC with downgrade rights to XP after Windows 7 is retired from market -- which according to policy is 2 years after the next version of Windows ships.

Last year, after being met with disapproval from analysts and consumers alike, Microsoft prolonged the availability of its Windows XP downgrade option to 18 months instead of six as originally planned. The decision meant that companies would have until April of 2011 to move off of XP. But now the aging operating system is getting yet another lease of life, as Microsoft decided to extend that period until 2020 throughout the Windows 7 lifecycle.

Microsoft's Brandon LeBlanc said in a recent blog post that Windows 7 has gained a lot of traction among consumers, and with Windows powering approximately 96% of the enterprise desktop market it's a no-brainer for most firms to eventually transition as well. However, 74% of businesses still use Windows XP, and for a lot of them the cost of upgrading their entire infrastructure to support Windows 7 is not financially justifiable just yet.

So, while few consumers may want to downgrade from Windows 7 to XP, it's another story in the corporate world where businesses often want to standardize on a single operating system to simplify machine management. The downgrade rights will be available only from OEM copies of Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate -- those that are pre-installed by computer makers. Curiously, the announcement coincides with the end of support for XP SP2, so anyone who still wants to be covered by Microsoft support will at least have to move to Windows XP's Service Pack 3.

Sun has gone down. Could its Solaris be next? Although Oracle, which bought Sun Microsystems last year has stated support for Sun’s version of Unix, there is discontent among advocates of open-source project OpenSolaris, and its governing board has threatened to disband. Oracle’s lack of attention to Solaris is hardly surprising; some doubted CEO Larry Ellison’s commitment to open source from the beginning. And a recent change to Solaris licensing terms limits free use has made the competing Linux community positively gleeful.

Apple Knew of iPhone Antenna Risks

Apple Inc. released its newest iPhone despite internal concerns about its antenna reception, and gave wireless carriers far less time to test the phone than is typical, according to people familiar with the matter...

What a bad joke

Apple to give away free cases to iPhone 4 users

Apple's not really ready to say it's sorry about the iPhone 4 antenna design, but it is willing to give all you darn squeaky wheels free cases for your trouble. Since Apple can't build its own Bumpers fast enough, it will give you a few options and let you decide, then send it your way for free as long as you purchased the phone before September 30th. Not good enough for you? Well, if you already bought a bumper from Apple you'll get a refund, and you can also return your phone for a full refund within 30 days as long as it's unharmed.

This solution comes at the end of 22 days of Apple engineers "working their butts off," according to Steve, with "physics" ultimately being pinned as the main culprit...........
