Re: Should DDDT2 Have gone ahead?

I don't think the distribution of WU is going to be a cause of frustration and drive people away. We know that most crunchers do not even visit these forums on a regular basis or care about their stats. They may have noticed an occasional WU from a new project IF they have automatically add new projects checked in their profile. That is if they even got a WU. We all know how hard that is, even if you are trying. I think that all the arguing amongst ourselves over the issue is doing more damage than anything else ever could.

We did start a badge contest so why should anyone be faulted for wanting to play to win. I think that the difficulty of obtaining WUs while noticing that some had already crunched 90 days (at least 1 with one year) made people feel they were somehow being excluded. That can lead to hard feelings.

I think that more information as to the progress of the WU creation and such where it is prominent (perhaps a special sticky thread) and not just a posting in one of the threads. We don't all live on this forum so we may have missed some posting that was considered important.

All the WUs that errored out was very strange to me. It caused quite a bit of anxiety on my part since it made me think there might be something wrong with my 'puter.

Cheers coffee

Re: Should DDDT2 Have gone ahead?

Just one thought for all:
Remember always that we all are here because primarily we want the science to be "done" for lack of a better word.
Some also add into their own outlook the pursuit of badges as lets be honest, watching a PC do it's work is like watching grass grow, boring beyond description.
That is why these forums exist and why the badge program exists, to add a little excitement to what we do.
Now keep in mind I'm saying this and I don't chase badges at all, I do the work that I personally consider the most important but I can understand the point that scribe was trying to make.
He's been at this way before it was popular to do this and for that deserves a little respect if nothing else.
Remember, friends first with a common goal, even when we disagree on particular issues.

Speak only for thy self ... when I am at my computer desk I have my second monitor on and up showing BOINC running on one of my computers all the time ... and I find it interesting indeed ... then again, maybe it is my autistic nature coming to the fore ... :)

Still, your main point is a good one, the prime goal is the science, the badges and CS earnings are just a way for us to keep score (personal bests as it were) but the point is to get the work done ...

In fact I refused the slavery to be chained to my 11 machines to try to capture the DDDT2 work. I prefer to go diving in the Maldives or to tour under the Sun on my Harley Davidson wink

Perhaps I should take a Clue from my Solar System Friend,
2 weeks ago it was snowing, Today it's supposed to be in the
twenties (70s for the Americans). I think I'll get out in the
weather today, perhaps pick up my bicycles and do a tune up.
I hope all of you are getting some good weather!

Ahh, I too have autistic traits though of a mild nature. Though that means I also find odd pleasure in just watching BOINC crunch away wink

Re: Should DDDT2 Have gone ahead?

I'm not someone who frequents the forums, but here's my opinion anyway. When I started doing WCG last year I had one machine crunching 24/7 (my Phenom 965) and didn't know about the badges. I knew I was doing my bit for mankind but never got to see the results until I received my first badge. That was the beginning of the end for me, I went on a rampage adding machines to the grid and now have two PCs at home, three at work and I've hijacked a friend's i7 (with permission). Badges aren't the be-all and end-all, but they certainly kicked me off; while it's always great sticking to a few projects and collecting another badge, the fact that your CPU is doing some good is much more important :)

Oh dolly, we'd not heard of someone that so quickly got addicted to work units parceled out by the chief WCG dealer, who alias is Feeder... yes the dispenser has an endless supply to take care of all the withdrawal symptoms you might ever incur :O)

Crunch on.

Mr. Feeder has a monopoly on the worldwide WCG workunit distribution to those of us who have become his thralls.
