What if... Sounds complicated, indeed. So if we move back to te original request, it was a lot simpler. I have a lot of sympathy for that - should be simple to implement. The issue is that people want to a) get emphasis on one or more projects by unchecking all the other projects b) do not want to "run dry" and therefore click "send me work from other..." c) in case of work from other projects, they would rather prefer work from some projects over others d) and some people would probably want to rule out doing work for specific projects at all, even if they would run dry otherwise Some simple switches on the server side would do the job. No intervals etc. Regards, Martin ![]() |

Personally I think that priorities would already provide us with much more flexibility to define our preferences, and it would be muuuuch simpler to implement.
----------------------------------------With this new feature we would be able to adjust what we receive the way we want and that would avoid much complexity on the server side and much frustration on the user's side (whether you see it compared to today's situation or compared to a "fully adjusted" mechanism not achieving the expected balance). Not forgetting that if the servers do all the adjustments that we like to do there will not be anything else to do for us than watching our computers crunching. Which (as somebody said recently) is as boring as watching grass growing. ![]() |

And I like seeing the badges in the forums so you can see the progress of a project. For instance, with the amount of work distributed for DDDT2, you would think that no one is making progress except that I have seen the emerald badge for more than one user. I do not know if the sapphire has been reached yet. I don't know how these users received the work units to execute this amount of work.

Quite simple really, as 1 Type A WU, ran for 50-60+ hrs, and thus, it didn't many WU's for that user to achieve a badge - and, if they; a) were in the right place at the right time so as to pick up several A types, and b) had several cores/computers available, these A types can (and do) soon mount up. Okay, if you were around when there was a shower of Type C WU's, you'd need a heck of a lot more of them - as they ran extremely quick (quite often, under 1 hr). I, personally, have accumulated over 46 days' worth of DDDT2 work, with only 2 cores ![]() ![]() |

Head over to the DDD2 Forum and read through some threads, buried in here are some details:) https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,28748 https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,28531 https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,28551 Short story is being in the right place at the right time when DDD2 tasks were released, then juggling things like project selections, work queue lengths, etc. Also, the more cores available to a user the more tasks they're going to get I'd venture to guess someone with a lot of cores is going to have a fair number of decent ones in there and it all adds up. So, a perfect storm and there ya go ![]() ![]() |

You would think I would get more work with four computers and twelve cores, but I know we have users with much more processing power that that especially with the availability of the i7. I have not acquired this new Intel processor yet. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 11, 2010 9:33:07 PM] |

I would like this option to be reconsidered. With the recent release of Windows CEP2 WU's, there are some random systems that just crash when running just one WU. I have a laptop that continues to do this. I have a profile selected to run other projects, but if there is no work I still get a random CEP2 work unit on it. I would like the option to guarantee CEP2 does not appear on that system but don't want it sitting idle.

Coleslaw,
----------------------------------------Don't know if this is a functional workaround, but on the associated profile, under Custom propose following: 1) Do NOT select CEP2 in main selection list. 2) Make sure the CEP2 bandwidth and 1 per host option "Run The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 without restrictions?" is set to NO 3) Set download bandwidth "Maximum download rate: xx Kbytes/sec" in profile or client below 128KB, e.g. 96KB. (This is the only science app presently having a bandwidth restriction) You should not be getting CEP2 even when you have "If there is no work...". If you do, then WCG is not honoring the bandwidth restriction i.e. something IMMHO to be corrected. If the workaround functions, it should not be too limiting for the other sciences as other full production sciences are rather small... 15 seconds or 10 seconds would not keep anyone awake ;o) Let me know if this works, e.g. select CEP2 explicitly in profile and see if your client does not download this science or reports there's not enough bandwidth. --//--

I would like the option to guarantee CEP2 does not appear on that system but don't want it sitting idle. You can do it right now ! Just select one of the standards devices profiles to do that (work, school, default, home), and apply it to this laptop device mentioned. Just select the projects of your preference and left CEP2 unchecked, but be aware that you need unchecked too, the box related with the option: If there is no work available for my computer for the projects I have selected above, please send me work from another project. If you do it, will be impossible download CEP2 WU's (veirfy the Beta testing options too, to manage to not receive Betas in this laptop, once CEP2 Betas would be launched and is presumable that this tasks will work in the same way of the CEP2 tasks). Good luck. have a nice crunch time. PS: sorry but don't saw SEKEROB coment before post my one, but the answers follow the same way.
Cheers ! GIB@
