Both good suggestions though it seems like it would be a lot simpler for people just adding the option. Sekerob's requires a lot of steps that shouldn't require such effort. But, it should work. Giba, I will most likely use your solution.

Had not realized that 3 steps is already allot these days, the rest if you wished to verify. Switching off "If there is no work..." runs risk of idle machines when the selection runs dry in the feeder, which is exactly what was wanted to be avoided and allow you to return to ''unattended'' crunching ;>)

Yes, but I would rather have that idle few seconds or minutes then to make a lot of tweaks that get erased every time I adjust my default setting. For some reason adjusting my default setting changes all of the profiles not just the one that is set as default. Thus 3 setting adjustments become a lot more effort. Especially for only one of many PC's to run smoothly here.

That would be a bug I'd think. "Default" is meant to be an independent profile. There's a "set as default" box somewhere on all 4 profiles (school, home, work, default), but that would only apply to newly attached devices i.e. if school was set as default all new hosts would get that one associated with.
----------------------------------------If you look in the message log, what profile is associated to the device? Generally I use the school/home/work profiles to make my science selections, but all else I do on the hosts in the local prefs (all within a LogMeIn session distance). Once a local host pref is set, the website prefs except for the science selections are ignored. PS, Now I wonder, when you do the science selections is that in the individual profiles or on "My Projects". That one would change all the profiles sciences selections, but should leave the operational settings alone. Just asking so I may try to reproduce this behavior. Maybe other members can write in if they've seen this head-scratcher. thx

Yup, I've seen it, don't know if I can reproduce it.
----------------------------------------What happens is when you select/deselect projects in default, it changes some or all of your other profile projects to be the same. ![]() Distributed computing volunteer since September 27, 2000 |

changing science selection for "default" in device profile changes only that profile,
changing via "My Projects" science changes all device profiles to match. been using this method since DDDT-2 came out, non DDDT boxes on home, others on work, use My Projects when no DDDT, change work to DDDT only when is "Raining", after rain, open my projects, save, and all back to current science of choice |

I suggest making an exclusion page, linked from and seperate from the project selection page to avoid confusion. It could have a clear mesage that selecting projects would cause you to not receive WU's for said project under any circumstances. I suggest making it impossible to select all "available projects". Also should a project being moved from "available" to "intermittent" or "completed" status result in all projects being excluded the default behaviour would be to set none to excluded.
----------------------------------------However. Untill it becomes evident people are leaving WCG in droves because of the lack of this functionality, I suggest it doesn't get implemented in any way shape or fashion. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by cw64 at Nov 19, 2010 6:05:36 PM] |

Yes it is when I change the default settings under My Projects. I typically don't change the default settings under device manager. If this was meant to be that way, I think it would be wise to change the name so they are not the same. If they work different, then this is a major place for confusion.

Confusion often stems from not ingesting the top or bottom texts on the configuration pages: This is what it says at top of:
----------------------------------------My Projects Please check, or uncheck, the boxes below to select which projects you'd like your computer to work on. This will set the preference for all of the computers that you currently have registered on World Community Grid. You may change the settings on a device by device basis by going to the Device Manager and customizing your device profiles. To underscore, changing project selections does NOT change operational control items such as the Bandwidth Upload Rate. That's set once per device profile and cannot be changed centrally, other than from BAM at BOINCStats or from an account at GridRepublic, and then it's still individually for school, work, home, default profile. Hope this clarifies.

Yep...that makes a lot more sense.
