confused Context menu keeps popping up in Windows 7

I've been experiencing an intermittent problem with the WCG BOINC Manager client on Windows 7 64 bit. The context menu that belongs to the BOINC system tray icon will occasionally pop up on its own wherever my mouse pointer is positioned. After dismissing the menu, it will reappear within a few minutes under my mouse pointer. It doesn't always happen with every Windows session (i.e. it may not happen again for several reboots), but when it does, even exiting the client and restarting it does not stop it from happening again. It is really annoying, but it seems that if I leave the client window open (or minimized to the taskbar and not the system tray) it will stop it from happening.

Anybody else experiencing this issue?

Re: Context menu keeps popping up in Windows 7

I have one system running Win 7. I have never had that problem. However, check your keyboard for a stuck key. Sometimes a stuck key can cause weird mouse effects. I have had that happen. Just plug in a different keyboard if you can not determine which key may the problem. If that cures it, you have a defective key or keyboard. If that does not work, I am out of ideas.

Cheers

Re: Context menu keeps popping up in Windows 7

I appreciate the suggestions, but I know it's not the keyboard or the WinKey. The context menu that is popping up under the mouse cursor is the one you get when you right-click the WCG icon in the system tray. It is only the context menu of the WCG client that pops up, never that of any other app. This makes me think it's a glitch with the WCG client.

In random order, presuming you're talking version 6.2.28

- Any mouse management software such as iTouch or whatever?

- Is boinctray.exe running? It should, always, from moment of... boot!

- Battery of wireless mouse?

It's for sure the first ever heard.

Correct, I'm running 6.2.28.

I am running Logitech Setpoint for my wired G5 mouse.

boinctray.exe is launched at boot time.

To test if the problem is mouse-related, I will tell Windows to hide the WCG taskbar icon. If it is indeed mouse-related, I should instead see the context menu of whatever systray app sits in boinctray's old place.

Re: Context menu keeps popping up in Windows 7

hmmm, yes could not remember the name of that monster kit of what, 120Mb just to set keyboard and mouse particulars. The boinctray app, opposed to what it's name suggests, only senses if keyboard/mouse action is ongoing so it can let BOINC go to sleep if the prefs are set that way.

Installed as service i.e. running before logging in or launched by the BM GUI when that is first started? I think you'll be more happier with 6.10.58 when it comes officially out as endorsed by WCG and then go for the 64 bit pack... http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_6.10.58_windows_x86_64.exe facilitates somewhat faster processing, particularly for the HCC science.

Oh, other experiment, if you exit the BM and let the boinc.exe core client service continue it definitely should not be showing. Most of the time I have the BM unloaded... for the precious crunching seconds it eats any given day.

Re: Context menu keeps popping up in Windows 7

I'm still getting the menu popping up even with the systray icon hidden, so I can't see it being an issue with the mouse.

I installed BOINC as an app, not as a service. If I exit the BM, it shuts down the core. I guess I will have to reinstall as a service.

Any idea when 6.10.58 will be officially endorsed by WCG?

Re: Context menu keeps popping up in Windows 7

Sometimes, but only very sometimes, I wish I could look over the shoulder of the help-seeker. Exiting BM and it closing the service hmmmm, open the Options menu and tell us what is ticked and not ticked in that screen.

Enable Manager Exit Dialog?
Run Manager at Login?

Not a sticky keyboard but a sticky mouse? Unless you need Setpoint, get rid of it or get the latest monster pack. I know that if there is poor connection between the BM and the core client due overzealous security all sorts of things go wonky. Ports 31416 needs to be open for all 5 BOINC elements:

boinc.exe
boinc.scr
boincmgr.exe
boinctray.exe (probably not but to make it absolutely sure include in exceptions)
boinccmd.exe

Windows 7, throw the standard BM in the bin and get BOINCTasks. BM issues are probably the numero uno problem generator... for a very long time.

oh, edit, when systems are inordinately busy I have sticking rightclick menu's from multiple applications. I have to take an option to get rid of them, else they wont go away... Firefox most frequently.

I had the exit dialog disabled. Now that I've enabled it, I can exit BM while boinc.exe continues to run. Good enough for me till the next version comes out. Thanks for your help!
