I thought that my upgrade to ubuntu 10.10 would go without a problem. It seems every time I upgrade ubuntu there is a problem with boinc and this time was not different. In the past it was the operating system was not supported and before that it was boinc could not download a work unit because of a incorrect certificate. This time I noticed a drastic reduction in the number of results and discovered the work was being suspended because the cpu use was too high. I did not increase the use of the computer at all since the upgrade to 10.10 so it had to be the upgrade. Once again upgrading to 10.10 cost me at least 100 results. I am going to have to look at 11.04 closely before I upgrade to it.

"CPU use is too high"? Did you mean this?

My reading assessment on 10.10 is. Skip... am going to pass and stay with 10.04.1 LTS.
----------------------------------------From the thread that Moonian thankfully linked to, WCG has with the official endorsement of 6.10.58 also matched the website device profiles and added the new field which in infinite wisdom was named differently to what it's descriptor is in the client. Its become: Suspend work if CPU usage is above 50 % of cpu ... without the note that zero (0) is equal to disabling this function. New accounts will see a default of 50% opposed to a BOINC default of 25%. It's a compromise as in tests, even at 90% it kicks in too often. Gamers and Facebookers app users will love it as BOINC will under normal webbrowsing conditions continue, but if WoW starts up and runs CPU use above that percentage, BOINC is paused by 10 seconds. And then the not so wise part of the current implementation of the feature: If LAIM (Leave application in memory when suspended) is not set, the sciences unload, so in 6.12 that will be changed and even when LAIM is off, the sciences wont unload during peak user system loading and stick in memory. These "CPU usage too high" last 10 seconds btw, after which computation will resume if loads have droppedagain and from the same point, lossless, if LAIM is set on with 6.10.58. Crunching on.

I have a quad computer that I do not monitor that often. I use vnc to see what it is doing. I upgraded to ubuntu 10.10 and looked to see if boinc was still running which it was and than we had the problem on the 14th so there was another reason for a decrease in results. I did look at the output of this computer and found that instead of having about 20 results a day for the past 6 days I had about 3 results a day. This computer is not used for anything besides boinc so I do not know why it would even get close to 25% cpu usage for programs beside boinc. I mean boinc is using 100% of each of the 4 cores most of the time. The fact that it was not a problem for years with previous versions of both boinc and ubuntu tells me it is a new problem. I just wish someone at wcg could test these updates and put out a warning when there is a problem.

Rick,
----------------------------------------I did put a FAQ out on this new feature http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...ead,28585_offset,0#269069 ... did anyone do the RTFM before upgrading a left alone device monitored only by vnc? Yes, I've noticed that even when nothing is using the system, at 25% the feature would kick in now and then. WCG did set the default to 50% and actually saw a message log yesterday that was posted on these forums where the value did change to 50% without indication of user interference. At any rate, the feature was created for users that complained that BOINC was impacting responsiveness. Given your system just crunches, set to zero to disable. cheers
