There will just be the old app for CPU and a new app for GPU... for all I know we'll be running both platforms concurrent. The client / server interaction will determine what a client needs to get.
In another new thread on GPU, knreed just confirmed there will be an opt-in both on production and beta. --//-- |

Here is the thread knreed posted in: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,32249
We will be adding a opt-in feature for GPU tasks. This will be controlled server side. So while your client may ask for GPU tasks, it will not receive them unless you have opted-in. This opt-in will apply for both beta and production apps. The option will be on the My Projects page and will also be on the device profile page. |

Won't this also require an upgrade to the WCG CERTIFIED Boinc version as well? The older Boinc versions have work fetch issues when both the cpu and the gpu are crunching for the same Project. The newer versions of Boinc address this much better, separating the two. I believe a whole LOT of WCG crunchers crunch ONLY for WCG making for some potential problems.

v.v. those planning to participate in GPU crunching [with an as yet not known minimum requirement], I'd say for best support, at least choose 6.10.58. Makes it so much easier for everyone, rather than having to understand what all the intermediate versions have in quirks and bugs. Now the time is right, before we launch into beta testing and broader education on the ins and outs. 6.12.33 (not .34) is known to work well with WCG, but does need getting used to with regards to the menu and the event log. Many partners and larger orgs will though stick to 6.10.58 I'm sure. That's the audited release.

IMO The GPU and CPU stats should be split, believe me if the WCG GPU app is as efficient as some of the other Boinc GPU apps then I would fore-see some unhappy campers, an example
----------------------------------------collatz conjecture mini CPU 1 core@3.3 17/18k secs 4.5/5 hrs collatz conjecture mini@AMD 4850 450secs 7min or so a 6950 will do around 2.5/3 mins Just another reference point for those who have never used GPU 2x6950 on Dnetc(now closed) will give you around 660k Boinc PPD 2x260GTX on Prime Grid(before the cull) 330k Boinc PPD That is nearly 1Million Boinc PPD or 7million WCG PPD @ that rate I would overtake my 49 Million WCG points(that has taken 2.7 yrs) in 7 days. However I have no idea how the point scoring for WCG GPU will be People have years of CPU time dedicated to WCG and could be BBQ in a matter of weeks with the onslaught of GPU tasks. Personally I was on the whole GPU points merry go round 2x6950/3x4850/2x4870/2x260gtx a single 4850 on mw/dnetc/collatz will do around 70k/90k ppd where it took 4x1055t/tri core 24/7 quad/dual part time for around 15k/18k ppd here HCC And before all the "not about points" naysayers come in.........I know.....it takes all sorts to make a project work [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 17, 2011 12:23:25 PM] |

Far as I can tell, the admins said no new badges. They're the decision makers in this matter. Not much to discuss if you ask me. (shrug) Oh puuulease, last time I looked the Berlin wall had fallen, users can make a case against decisions they are not happy about, just like they did when your project(milkyway) tried to SELL double credits |

This is a very interesting problem. As you can see by my sig, I have a horse(s) in this race. Been at this a while and before WCG, at UD and SETI. I lost all my points at UD and I suppose that I still have them at SETI so I know about losing bragging rights (it "aint no biggie").
----------------------------------------The real point is ... I don't think ... there is a perfect solution to this dilemma and someone is going to be upset no matter what "solution" they use. Everyone seems to be arguing that one solution or another is better. I have a preferred, albeit equally flawed, solution but at the end of the day..does it really matter which they choose or chose? Well into WWII one company built a tremendously expensive optical gun sight manufacturing plant .. just as radar was being perfected for that purpose. Immense waste of time and effort. We have another of those technical dilemmas here. And this will not be the last one. As you can see, I have something approaching 150 million WCG points accumulated over 7 years and thousands of personal $s and I can't buy a cup of coffee with them nor could I if I had a Trillion points. What are they good for? I know ... I know ... it's fun. But the real objective is to find the solutions. Finally I would say that I don't envy the folks at WCG. They are trying to make the best decision for the projects and the contributors and they are going to get yelled at no matter what. As always, no good deed goes unpunished. ![]() ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by RT at Dec 17, 2011 3:09:59 PM] |

I know I will likely need to invest something in hardware, but that's OK as I want to help making life better for those suffering with caancer. I would also like to see GPU applications for all the WCG projects I crunch, but realize the costs involved might exceed the resources available for now.
