Re: To Project Scientists: Clean Energy Project Phase 2 - Limited Cruncher Participation

Just wanted to tell:
I am one of the happy members having my 2 i7 computers running all 8 cores with CEP2 and having no problems at all, very low on error WU's. Of course the resource usage is some higher and there is a lot of disk activity, but no problems. The dual core computer are also ok with CEP2.
And they are running 24/7.

Re: To Project Scientists: Clean Energy Project Phase 2 - Limited Cruncher Participation

Hi everybody,

sorry that it took me a few days to come back to this thread but we have been very busy on other fronts... Thanks a lot to knreed for chiming in on the technical issues and for pushing towards making the load settings more flexible!

Let me briefly reply to two other open questions:

1) We don’t expect CEP2 to run out of work within the next year, so there is plenty of time for the badge hunters.

2) We are taking your criticism regarding uploads serious and have been investigating potential improvements with our friends at IBM and Harvard Research Computing. We are tweaking some of the settings and hope things on the upload front may improve somewhat.

Best wishes and keep crunching!

Your CEP Team

Thanks for the update on the project we do understand that you have a lot of work that keeps you busy.

I am defiantly glad that there will be work for 1 year + that should allow me to at least get an emerald badge for this project

please keep us up to date on all your wonderful improvements and any neat tech stuff that happens with the project

Great. I hope that works out.

Re: To Project Scientists: Clean Energy Project Phase 2 - Limited Cruncher Participation

Two things I tried out today to aleviate some "problems" encountered with CEP2, these kept me away from crunching...

1- To control the number of CEP2 WU running at the same time on my Quad core, I'm running with 50% of the cores (ie TWO) on CEP2 in Win7 while the other two are busy crunching C4CW via Linux Ubuntu on VMware; runs very well. Any virtualized OS would be fine, be it Win, Mac or Linux...

2- For those using W. Digital Caviar Black hard drives, while they are pretty quick, they are very noisy with CEP2 running. I've rubber mounted them all to silence them and insulated with bubble wrap the insides of the side panels on my computer casings. Aaaaahh! What a difference that made!

I'm reaching Emerald tomorow on C4CW, so now I'm ready to put back my modest 10 core farm @ work on CEP2

Love the idea of being able to select the number of work units per machine.

Re: To Project Scientists: Clean Energy Project Phase 2 - Limited Cruncher Participation

I have intermittently contributed to WCG and similar projects. It's frustrating to hear my PC rev up its CPU fans, and a lot of the projects are rather opaque on what all of those CPU cycles went too.

I know supercomputers have helped solve big problems before, but I can't even name 1 instance where they have helped (genome mapping maybe?).

Anyway, projects like the rice and water, compared to the African climate look like a good step in the direction of actionability, and the Facebook updates are nice as well.

Re: To Project Scientists: Clean Energy Project Phase 2 - Limited Cruncher Participation

I have four PCs with a total of 12 cores running various versions of Windows. I haven't had any problems with running CEP2 on all 12 cores simultaneously. I changed my projects to DDDT2 only yesterday (with the exception of BETA), and the only new work I got was BETAs for C4CW. I just changed my projects back to include CEP2 and immediately got new work for that project.

True to my word, we are finished at Spinhenge and I will try these again in "limited quanity". I'll pair your wu with a machine with 3 GPU's of GPUGrid's new "monster" wu's. If that works, we will be good to go.

I see you are up to 18 years/day from 15 so it looks like things are working out for you. peace
