All fixed now. Thanks for the input. I am letting it download the updates but ask me before installing so I can pick and choose if I want. Any input on the GPU comparison here? 5870 vs 7770 The 5870 has a 256 bit memory bus vs 128 bit for the 7770. By this sites numbers it seems like the 5870's are better. Am I reading this wrong?(likely since I don't have a ton of knowledge in this area)  It's obvious the power consumption is way less. FWIW I have run both the 5870 and the 7770. The 7770 about doubles the output of the 5870 running the WCG GPU app at about 40% less power. Results can vary depending on hardware and over clocking.

Looking at the specs the card is only single precision. Will not work Milkyway.
For me to upgrade and be able to work Milkyway when WCG GPU work is done it has to be a 59xx, 69xx or a 79xx card. |

Any 58xx card will work on MW@H. They are all DP capable.

I am currently running 3 cards, 1 5870 and 2 5850 in my main cruncher. I was looking to upgrade all 3 cards without breaking the bank and the 7790's looked good until I noticed they would not do double precision work.
The 59xx, 69xx and the 79xx are the only ATI cards I see that are going to be steps up for me on the double precision side. I like the Milkyway project for GPU over collatz at the moment. The work seems to have more usefulness to me.  If WCG starts new or continues the GPU work I will stay here and the 7790's will work just fine for me.  I may just have to use this issue as justification to build another cruncher and just populate it with 4 7790's in a six core 2011 machine.  |

FWIW you can buy a 7970 or 2 7950s for less than the cost of 4 7790s and have the DP capabilities you're looing for. A 7970 can do a MW@H WU in less than 1 minute. With the 8xxx series on the horizon the 79xx cards should be coming down in price. Might pay to wait.

OK all, time did not work to my advantage in acquiring new GPU's.
 Time on the other hand will give me twins in October!   Finances will now be diverted in another direction for a little(long?) bit.   |
