confused Need input on a contributing solution

confused I have some corporate desktops that need to be cleaned [disk info] and hate Win-NT anyway [wipe-it-clean]
How do y'all think about this computing solution ?
I need to know before I buy 1 or 2 Gig thumb drives/sticks.
[got Ubuntu on 1 desktop and am contributing but am clueless on how to maintain Linux beyond BOINC ]

just found this solution :

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...ead,29835_offset,0#303270 from NANOProbe /Linux forum

at http://www.dotsch.de/boinc/Dotsch_UX.html

quote: • Reduced energy : A hard disk drive requires about 5 to 10 W energy. Calculated for a permanent running system
(365 days) and 0,20 Euro/KW per hour, each removed HDD saves about 44 KWh..88 KWh per year = 8...17 Euro per
year.
A USB stick uses about 0,1..0,9 Watt = 0,8...7 KWh per year => 0,2...1,75 Euro costs per year.
For a diskless installation it depends on the setup. Breakthrough is reached, when more diskless clients are installed,
than hard disks

Re: Need input on a contributing solution

UNiRAC,

What spec are these PCs ?
Win NT implies old (1990s?) so unlikely to be cost effective or run larger projects.

Saving power on HD is good, but most power, and hence cost, goes to CPU etc.
Need to calculate running costs and compare with capital and running costs of a new, more efficient (MIPS per watt), system.
See this thread earlier in this forum -
Can you do more with less? 134.5 Floating Point MIPS/W.... still tweaking

Dotsch/UX can be run from CD without affecting HD (can use thumb drive for storage), thumb drive or HD.
If using just CD need enough RAM for BOINC RAM-disk as well as running programs.
Note running CEP from thumb drive may kill it due to the high write activity, I had one die so now use HD.

Paul.

UNiRAC

If you have a load of desktops and are happy to keep em powered up then go for it

Ubuntu from a USB Flash Drive is the simplest way to get them contributing to the research here on the WCG

You could have them crunch on BOINC on a 2Gb Flash Drive with 1Gb allocated as ¨persistence¨ i.e. a disk drive

Just make sure you have access to the BIOS so they can be configured to boot from the USB Stick

If they are just for crunching then just let them get on with it. Every now and again just go to update manager and download the latest and greatest

Best of luck

Dave
