"Retrieving current status" and nothing more happens

Hi,

I registered and downloaded boinc_6.10.58_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh and then run it. Then I run BOINC/run_manager script which started a GUI. There's only one message which does not change: Retrieving current status".
In the "Advanced View" in the status bar is a message: "Connecting to localhost" which does not change either.

I am using Slackware Linux 13.1.

What's the problem?

Re: "Retrieving current status" and nothing more happens

Hello,

I just started having the same issue last night. So thinking it must be my Win7 64 machine, I uninstalled and re-installed BOINC. This I have done over many years to numerious machines running, 2000, XP and Win7.

However, the Grid Icon is disabled and I still get the message: "Connecting to client".

I've check the firewall, I even deleted the BOINC program files and program data folders and reinstalled again. But although it appears to be a good install, It's not connecting. The "advanced view" is blank, and containess no projects nor tasks. And the "simple view" is "Retreiving Current Status"...

Having tried for two hours, (on something that is relatively simple, I'm beginning to think that the servers are down. However, we don't see a global message stating so.

If you find a solution, please let us know, and we will do the same for you. Cheers.

Re: "Retrieving current status" and nothing more happens

Don't know what's wrong with running ./run_client --daemon , but /run_manager wont start the core client / daemon.

See http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC

Properly installed under Ubuntu the command is:

sudo service boinc-client start

But nothing really needs done as the service is auto-started for most and many even before anyone logs in.

Re: "Retrieving current status" and nothing more happens

PS: Quite some time ago I launched a discussion over at the developers for the BM to check if the CC is actually running and provide user feedback, which sort of stuck at the point of rights or something if recollecting well... a major issue through the years for many volunteers one would hope of it being a resolvable issue, but seemingly not. Once the CC is running it's easy to pass instructions to the client via the terminal boinccmd tool.

Being not so frequently used platforms, slackware/rhel/centos/freebsd , these are not tested or supported distros, it coming down to member to member help and some serious guessing from the volunteer helpers assuming it will kind of working the some on all them.

Sorry and plz do let us know how it works out or what progress is made as these support threads do form a reference for others.

Re: "Retrieving current status" and nothing more happens

I don't really get it. On my netbook, BOINC doesn't work, on my main PC it works. On both runs Slackware 13.1 32bit.

I think, there are some libs missing. I can't imagine what could it else be. I'll continue to try and when I find the answer, I'll notice you.

The funny thing is, I successfully build BOINC on my netbook -- ok, without GUI but the program still crashed...

edit Ok, this is really crazy. I created a virtual machine running a clean Slackware 13.1 install and then downloading and running BOINC. Guess what? BOINC runs without any problems...
I hope it doesn't have to do with my notebook hardware. I think I'll try running a VM on my notebook and see what happens.

Re: "Retrieving current status" and nothing more happens

I ran into this issue last night. I was installing ubuntu 10.10 onto two crunchers. The first one worked just fine. However, when I installed boinc onto the 2nd one I ran into this issue. I installed boinc from the terminal using sudo apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager. Running boinc resulted in boinc getting stuck on "retrieving current status" and I couldn't add a project. I uninstalled boinc and reinstalled it the same way to see if that would fix the issue, but it did not help. I was able to get boinc to work by downloading boinc_6.10.58_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh from the website and manually installing it.

Very strange...

Re: "Retrieving current status" and nothing more happens

I am having this same issue on Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Infact I noticed recently that all work has suddenly stopped on its own for no reason as of about Feb 7. I saw messages saying there was a newer version, so I downloaded it, and since then I'm just stuck. If I runboinccmd.exe --project_attach www.worldcommunitygr
id.org <my account key> it says "can't connect to local host".
