A more pronounced 'post-weekend bump' than usual, has carried the UK team to a new daily Runtime record!
----------------------------------------![]() Date RunTimeApart from 23-09-12 all dates are Mondays. A new daily Points record was also set: Date Points The daily Results record was set by Saturday's crunching: Date Results ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Collectively WCG crunched 405:229:06:39:28 the first time the total has been >400 years in a day since mid-July. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by jonnieb-uk at Oct 16, 2012 8:14:12 AM] |

The UK team have moved ahead of IBM Taiwan to #80 in the Points rankings.
----------------------------------------![]() The impact of GPU processing means that target estimates are more volatile than ever, but it would appear that 3 teams are in our sights by early January 2013: IBM Corporation #76 - 66 days; MYCHAT@TAIWAN #78 - 70 days; Michigan Tech #72 - 81 days. As might be expected the Results rankings are in a state of flux, though the UK team at #79 appears to be making better than expected progress against MYCHAT@TAIWAN #78 - 18 days; ek$i sozluk cpu power #74 - 44 days; Kentucky Wildcats Folding Team #72 - 47 days; Ars Technica #73 - 62 days. Slightly slower progress against BOINCstats #78 - 28 days. Finland #75 have lengthened to 86 days (73 days a week ago) and Team Norway #76 having (I think) fully embraced GPU processing, have shot out from 61 days last week to a cuurent estimate of 546 days! In the RunTime rankings, largely unaffected by GPU processing, progress is painfully slow. ![]() ![]() ![]() The solution, of course, is more new members ![]() Follow the link to join the UK team: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=L721SPD4BN1 |

I have passed the 150,000 results returned milestone lately!
----------------------------------------Hopefully the 200,000 results returned milestone will come quicker with a few GPU's in the fleet. I am disappointed that there is no support for the Quadro FX 1700 as I have 8 workstations which I could have utilised. I would like to run the GPU when the computer is in use but I have found performance to be a nightmare, and thats when using windows explorer and the internet. God knows what it would be like trying to use 3D AutoCAD.

----------------------------------------I am disappointed....... ....I have found performance to be a nightmare..... I'm just as disappointed/hacked off. ![]() ![]() You're not alone regarding performance issues. The forum is littered with adverse comments. With time maybe things will settle down. |

Just an idea, what boinc version are you running?, I remember a suggestion that running 7.0.36 works best for GPU?

----------------------------------------I've tried both 7.0.28 and currently 7.0.36 x64. with no change. ![]() There's a discrepancy in the log though it seems to make no difference: 7.0.28 16/10/2012 12:22:36 | | ATI GPU 0: BeaverCreek (CAL version 1.4.1741, 256MB, 223MB available, 568 GFLOPS peak) 16/10/2012 12:22:36 | | OpenCL: ATI GPU 0: BeaverCreek (driver version CAL 1.4.1741 (VM), device version OpenCL 1.2 AMD-APP (938.2), 256MB, 223MB available) 7.0.36 16/10/2012 13:07:30 | | ATI GPU 0: AMD Radeon HD 6x00 series (Sumo) (CAL version 1.4.1741, 256MB, 223MB available, 568 GFLOPS peak) 16/10/2012 13:07:30 | | OpenCL: ATI GPU 0: AMD Radeon HD 6x00 series (Sumo) (driver version CAL 1.4.1741 (VM), device version OpenCL 1.2 AMD-APP (938.2), 256MB, 223MB available) |

----------------------------------------God knows what it would be like trying to use 3D AutoCAD. I know too: non-viable. Definite 'snooze' of everything when using the machine for anything non-trivial so far as I'm concerned. Fortunately, my one usable GPU is in my non-latpop and I only use it a day or so every fortnight. That said, given the heat produced, I sincerely doubt that I'd be allowing GPU tasks to run on my Thinkpads even if they would! ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Mike D Green at Oct 16, 2012 1:14:42 PM] |

Just an idea, what boinc version are you running?, I remember a suggestion that running 7.0.36 works best for GPU? I am using version 6.10.58 as provided by WCG. I would hope that WCG offer the most efficient version as a download. It should not be up to the end user to experiment with various versions to determine which one is best. I am disappointed that WCG does not support more GPU's, as I have a fleet of them at work and unfortunately most cannot be used here. I have tried other GPU projects outside of WCG and they run without any problems on the cards not supported here. Does anybody know if there are any plans to support these cards at a later date?

@ crooks_uk
----------------------------------------Nothing I've seen/read indicates anything certain about the future direction of WCG GPU processing. I would guess that support of more (existing) GPUs for HCC is unlikely. If another project comes on board with GPU processing then possibly the range of permited cards might change/expand. I totally agree with your comment re BOINC 6.10.58 as provided and certified by WCG. A charitable view would seem to be that WCG is under resourced to implement/support the major extension to it's scope, represented by GPU processing. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by jonnieb-uk at Oct 16, 2012 5:36:24 PM] |

I think with the advent of GPU processing that version 6.10.58 does not have the level of control required.
----------------------------------------Allowing GPU processing whilst using the computer makes the computer almost useless for anything else. I am taking about £3k workstations with quad/hex core xeon processors, workstation class GPU's and 24 GB Ram. I would expect BOINC to only use spare resources for the GPU, not to render my workstation useless, in the same manner as running low priority tasks o the CPU! I am frustrated having GPU's which could make a significant contribution to the cause and not being able to make use of them. And I don't like having to uninstall my BOINC versions as you cannot undertake GPU processing whilst installed as a service. Rant over!
