I am starting a thread here where people can post the URLs of articles about Leishmaniasis. I was quite startled in the 1990's when I read a chapter in a book that described how Visceral Leishmaniasis burned through part of British India in the early 1800's like the Black Death did through Europe in the 1300's under the name of Kala-azar (Black Fever). I had never heard of it before.
So here are some URLs: https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/news/issue.cfm?id=2394 http://www.searo.who.int/en/Section10/Section2163.htm http://www.oneworldhealth.org/kala-azar http://www.cdc.gov/parasites/leishmaniasis/ http://www.medicinenet.com/leishmaniasis/article.htm http://www.vet.uga.edu/vpp/clerk/joiner/ Lawrence |

I read the Wiki page to learn a little more.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leishmaniasis Perhaps one of the scientists would edit that page to include this initiative. That might help in recruiting a few more crunchers to work on the project. Cheers |

A cross post of an article linked by mortsnorkle into this Leishmaniasis news collection thread: http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2012/11/24/military-pushes-war-on-sand-flies/
The journalist did not do her homework, and missed that it's rife in South America too and as the globe is warming, moving north into Central and North America as have already done more fly/mosquito carrying pathogens. ![]() Source WHO: http://www.who.int/leishmaniasis/leishmaniasis_maps/en/ It's coming to your backgarden too [unavoidably], already in a pocket on the USoM/USA border. Prevention is better than curing [to which the pharmaceuticals manufacturers of course would never agree]. |

The journalist did not do her homework, and missed that it's rife in South America too and as the globe is warming, moving north into Central and North America as have already done more fly/mosquito carrying pathogens. She did not proofread either - "Enymologists -- bug experts to you and me." It should be "entomologists". Cheers

It's an interesting finding. However, they haven't demonstrated that the Endonuclease G deficient Leishmania can elicit a primary immune response or immunological memory that will protect against a second challenge.

Here is a little more about the University of Iowa vaccine trial: http://bbs.yale.edu/microbiology/people/diane_mcmahon-pratt-2.profile
It shows connections to Colombia and Yale University. Also, a recent brief article on vaccines: http://endtheneglect.org/2012/03/a-short-history-of-leishmania-vaccines/ |
