Vester, that pretty time-piece picture might be as if it's starting in screensaver mode. If remembering well, back in NT days one needed to hit Ctrl-shift-Del or similar to get the log in screen, ESC certainly nice-er.
Whilst I'm curious, as with Hypernova, I'm very happy with with W7 and with SP1 even happier... even snappier under full BOINC load and heavy app use [but not as snappy as Linux with Unity interface ;>] --//-- |

I understand it's pretty much a pre-beta version, but so far I'm not impressed. I'm too old school I guess; I don't get what's better about clicking on blocks.

I'm running WCG Projects on Windows 8 for 3 days in a row now, but I didn't get any credit for it, nor does my pc show up in the "device statistics" screen. Any idea?

One of 2 possibilities:
1. BOINC did not run, but unlikely. 2. Your BOINC was registered to a second account you might have. --//-- |

They said this version is designed for tablets and not desktops, but that the underlying OS will be exactly the same for each. Win8 is faster than Win7 and at the 'MS release event' loaded the OS before the monitor even powered on, that was on an HP desktop system. It is designed to be even less of a memory hog and release memory better than even Win7, and run on old hardware too. ![]() ![]() |

Thanks for the hints! It's working now. 28 results returned, and credit granted for it.

Just played with it for a little bit. Not real happy that the start menu has been rearranged, The ribbons would require some getting use to. I logged on to the home page here at WCG but the forums section would not load. I may play with it more but I don't see any compelling reason to update from Win7 at this point. This version looks like it is more suitable to a tablet or a touch screen desktop. Maybe after some more play time.
----------------------------------------![]() I may try an update install to one of my Win7 crunchers this weekend to see what happens.

I wonder how much hardware it is able to take advantage of? What is Windows 8 able to scale to?
100 cpu cores? 100 gpu? 800 terabytes of ram? It be interesting to know what it would take advantage of in hardware specs if you gave it to it? I look at Windows 8 as a media center interface with live channel updates. I do my real office work on the desktop and my fun not so import things on the Metro UI like checking facebook, watching a video or playing a game. It could be a live agenda of fun things you like to do on a Saturday morning. Then go back to work on the desktop. sorry to repeat myself. What are other peoples opinions on this idea? |
