My take is that UEFI basically allows you to prevent someone coming along and booting to a USB Linux system and stealing your info.
----------------------------------------The Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) is a specification that defines a software interface between an operating system and platform firmware. UEFI is a more secure replacement for the older BIOS firmware interface present in all IBM PC-compatible personal computers that makes them vulnerable to bootkits... UEFI is not restricted to any specific processor architecture and can run on top of (or instead of) traditional BIOS implementations Ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unified_Extensible_Firmware_Interface I have a UEFI enabled Motherboard and it allows me to control the boot device (with a mouse, drag and drop). Thus I could add a Linux drive, boot to the UEFI Bios[/I] and select whichever drive I wanted to boot to (win or Linux). Anyway, W8 takes some getting use to. When a program fails it tends to slow down the entire system real bad, but it's still far too early to draw conclusions. It's obviously very like Vista/W7 but in some ways it reminds me of Linux! PS. 6.12.38 works if installed as a service. [Edit 1 times, last edit by skgiven at Sep 24, 2011 6:54:58 PM] |

I'm starting to get the feeling that windows 8 will be a tablet OS that you CAN put on a PC if you REALLY REALLY want to. It would make a certain kind of sense, larger institutions probably won't be too eager to move to Windows 8 en masse no matter what form it takes. How many of them jumped from Windows XP to windows 7? How many of them had to buy all new hardware for that? My old work switched to Win7 when they bought new pc's as part of their replacement program. Over 4 years every pc gets replaced, the county would buy about 10,000 pc's per year. They had vendor issues with some software not being Win7 compatible but were abe to sort thru that ok. I used to work as the pc replacement coordinator for a department in a local county government. They do not even start the switch until Service Pack 1 is released though. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by mikey159b at Sep 25, 2011 4:11:58 PM] |

My take is that UEFI basically allows you to prevent someone coming along and booting to a USB Linux system and stealing your info. This is true to a certain extent, but the first rule of computer security is physical access. A person can take a hard drive, with the proper tools and amble amount of time, access the information stored within. Restricting boot device keeps an honest crook away. ![]() |

Whilst some may handwave it as no problem, it seems to be working up some very knowledgeable people at Red Hat and others.
http://yro.slashdot.org/story/11/09/28/131122...nst-windows-8-secure-boot Frankly, I'm glad there folks who take issue, as I don't want to accidentally buy my next computer off the rack with this little BIOS funking and discover I can't get Linux to run on it. After having spend a few hours in W7-64, cant say that snail has much appeal left beyond writing MSN messages. GNOME 2 or 3.2 is so much faster, even KDE, Unity or LightDM or the zillion other freely available interfaces that are to be had. Web-browsing under Linux with FF 6 or 7 has put the fun back in. --//-- |

I'm not waving at the prob and I respect/share concern about choice, but try sticking Windows on a Mac! I think (hope) this will be limited to small devices (you know the ones that get stolen from peoples pocket/bag). More of a prevent the device being nicked and reset, reloaded with whatever version of operating system the thief can use and flogged on, as happens millions of times a year (EU only) with mobiles.
Bottom line is, if you don't want it, don't buy it, buy something else. Can't see this being implemented on a desktop, not that I would buy an OEM desktop. PS. AMD dropping XP support, next driver to be the last. |

I want security left in my hands and my hands only. I don't need MS or anyone else restricting me or telling me how I can use my software/hardware that I paid for. Now I know some may welcome this and for most users it won't be an issue but if this is implemented in Win8 then I will pass.

If for some strange reason I buy some sort of hand held touch screen device, I will buy an inexpensive one with the operating system I want and stick to it. While it would be nice to be able to switch OS as and when I wish, it's down to the EU to determine that. As I won't buy one to crunch with it's not really an issue for here and if for some reason I want to change OS I will sell the one I have and buy another device with the OS I then want. If using W8 means I can't install another OS I will be happy in the knowledge that if someone steals the device, it will be useless to them or anyone else, and my data will not be exploited. There is no way I would buy a desktop system with such a restriction, but then I'm not likely to buy an OEM system anyway, and motherboards will be available that can be used with any OS.
Why I might be annoyed is that at times I use a Linux boot disk (as well as Kaspersky) to recover data for clients, but I would expect recovery partitions to be there. |

The bottom line is this:

Has anyone got GPU's to work with BOINC in W8 Developer? I haven't messed with it much, but this system is about to go back to its home.

Security researcher defeats Windows 8 secure boot
The details of the Windows 8 bootkit have not yet been shared, but Kleissner said in his Twitter feed this morning that the new bootkit, called Stoned Lite, has an infector file that is only 14 kilobytes in size, and the bootkit can be started from a USB drive or CD. The cat and mouse chase continues ... ![]() |
