based on the information provided, I would say CPU usage is too high, there is a setting "suspend if cpu usage is over xx%" without more info, is best answer I am willing to give. First 20-30 lines of messages tab showing version/os/cpu and settings will help, from beginning down to "starting task xxxxxx" line

Rudi In BOINC Manager Preferences > Processor usage, set the "while processor usage is less than" setting to 0. Wait for a WCG Tech or CA to make sure this is correct. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Johnny Cool at Sep 29, 2011 8:39:34 PM] |

Ok, just trying to get a WCG Tech or CA to notice this thread quicker.
----------------------------------------![]() I think if you try that setting in your Boinc client, there is *only* a 16.873% chance that your home and 4 or 5 of your neighbor's homes will go up in smoke. ![]() ![]() j/k! I had to make that change about two months ago to work on Beta Testing. I*still* need 28 hours for a Bronze in that project. ![]() |

Still no answer from a WCG tech or a CA?
----------------------------------------Two things to check for: I had Googled "CPU usage too high" and found a post (I wish I had posted the url) and found that newer versions of Boinc (well, if it has been awhile that you have had a newer version of Boinc), that setting was recommended at the Berkeley (sp?) Boinc forums almost a year ago. Another thing to check: Have you gone to MyGrid to see if you have been automatically opted in the Drug Search for Leishmaniasis project? I was and I think that option was also recommended to run that. I unchecked that, yet checked the "send new work units' beside my current HFCC project to get Beta Testing work. I went to my Boinc client and made that "In BOINC Manager Preferences > Processor usage, set the "while processor usage is less than" setting to 0. Meaning no restrictions. It worked for me after I changed the preference in my Boinc client and then hit the 'Update' button in my client. Rudi, not 100% sure, but it *could* be a reason why you may have gotten that message. Hopefully, you will get an answer very soon. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Johnny Cool at Sep 30, 2011 12:16:22 AM] |

![]() By default, BOINC will shut down if non-BOINC programs exceed 25% of CPU usage. To change this, click on My Grid - Device Manager - (selected profile). Personally, since I have a desktop and do not have to worry about cooling, I use the profile named Home, and set it to run at Maximum Output. Remember to SAVE after changing a profile. If you want to change individual settings after changing to Maximum Output, choose the Custom Profile. You can check on this by right-clicking on the bottom of the screen and selecting Task Manager. If the BOINC projects cannot run on all your cores because of other background programs you run, just reduce the percentage of cores that you allow BOINC to run on. Lawrence |

To augment [and give JC peace of mind], the WCG clean install, new member default is 50% after long in house testing. Berkeley for reason unbeknown to me set it to 25%... extremely conservative... the slightest user load and u see the behavior as displayed in the top post.
Yes, the "while processor usage is less than" setting for most can be set to 0 to disable the function. Some versions of BOINC responded to it's own processes so counted in the the sciences and then when hitting 100% it would pause too [figure that]. --//-- P.S. I thought the purpose of this function was to allow you to close locked up applications without losing Boinc work, due to heartbeat failures and so on.
Don't know why it would need to be 25%. Perhaps Berkeley suddenly thought running tasks at low priority might somehow interfere with low/normal system use. Even a default of 75% would seem reasonable enough to me. Well, on all but the most basic systems (atom netbooks trying to run office). |
