Nusiance problem with DSFL and Norton

One of the things Norton Internet Security does is pop alerts for things like high CPU usage. Not really a problem with crunching as the alert has a link to click on that brings up a window for the executable that's using the high CPU (ie, the science app) and you can tell it not to alert for that file. You have to do that again the next time the science app gets updated but that's not that often. However, something is wrong with DSFL. Norton's alerting on wcg_dsfl_vina_6.19_intelx86 but when you click on the link for details, it can't find it. Note that there's no .exe in the file name. I don't recall this happening when DSFL started so I'm not sure what changed or if it could be a batch packaging error. If I ignore the alert, it goes away only to reappear later. I keep ignoring them for now but am wondering what's up? I do find a wcg_dsfl_6.19_windows_intelx86 file in the slots directory for each WU.

Re: Nusiance problem with DSFL and Norton

In my Norton Settings options (under Miscellaneous), I've actually got my High CPU Usage Alert switched off...

Perhaps this may get around this issue

keithhenry,

Your suite is possibly loosing track. DSFL (and I'm surprised it's not alerted on GFAM doing exactly the same), is 2 parts, a stager and a worker. Not finding it might be when it unloads at end of each job in a task (less than 10 to over 100 per WU) and a new one is loaded with a new PID.

P.S. Refraining to comment on the Norton choice, which is enough of a comment ;>)

Re: Nusiance problem with DSFL and Norton

I prefer not to disable the high CPU alerts since that can alert me to the occasional website that can be an issue. From what I am seeing, I think you're right Sek. I am getting the alerts during the processing of a WU, not just at the beginning. I'm seeing this with DSFL on my C2D. I don't recall seeing it on my quad when DSFL started. That's something I'll want to look into after the holiday here. I have crunched GFAM on the quad as well and didn't notice this issue with it there but I'll want to try it on the C2D as well to see if it does this as well. As for the PS., thanks Sek. I know. AV software seems to be just like wireless routers. I have no problem find folks that love a particular one and others that despise it.

Okay, I'm seeing the same thing on the C2D with GFAM as well. It would appear to be related to how Vina is being loaded during the WU. Do GFAM and DSFL load a file under one name when it has another on disk?

Re: Nusiance problem with DSFL and Norton

The holiday season has kept me rather busy but it appears that this problem is caused by the fact that the science app does not have a file extention (.exe). I've seen the same thing on at least one other non-WCG project as well. The problem is that Norton seems to expect the file to have an extention (not necessarily a good assumption on their part) and, when it alerts on a file with no extention, it can't find the file when you try to use their interface to say that that is okay and to not alert on that specific file. However, there is a way to manually add files to their "exclusion" list but you have to know where they are and that's not something the typical cruncher is likely to be able to figure out.

Re: Nusiance problem with DSFL and Norton

If you can add an entire folder to the exclusion list that would be your ideal solution. Tell it to ignore the BOINC folder and you won't be bothered again.

Re: Nusiance problem with DSFL and Norton

Just replaced my laptop and of course it came with the Norton Nuisance Suite. First time it asked to approve GFAM vina app , did it with a permanent exception (because it was deemed to use to much CPU time), and then added the BOINC data dir to the scan exclusion zone. Sofar not heard of Norton again which is positive 1 week on.

edit: This host has so far completed about 100 tasks in a mix of DSFL/GFAM/CEP2, with a 100% score.

Re: Nusiance problem with DSFL and Norton

The irritation level with Norton suite [fully up to date] has just been reached after the arrival of DDDT2 units. Frequent alerts that this process is using lots of CPU time, but when wanting to give the exemption [stay silent] like for GFAM and DSFL, the message is that no such file exists. Lest I find the place to manually enter the mask, it's going to be a [albeit] belated grand exitus for Norton... yet again.

--//--

edit: Found the location to enter the wcg_dddt2_charmm_6.40_windows_intelx86 mask, so Norton gets a stay of execution :| Tried a wildcard wcg_*_windows_intelx86 in the selection field, but Norton just reverts to offering a filtered selection to pick from.

Re: Nusiance problem with DSFL and Norton

I see you now have the full experience. wink If the filename ended with .exe, then you'd have been able to exempt the file from the pop up and not have to hunt for the manual way to enter it plus finding the file to exempt in the first place. We're able to do that but I suspect your typical user would not and could well drop the project to end the nusiance.
