Latest version of Boinc client

Hi,

The WCG Boinc client is version 6.10.58 (both Windows and linux) but the official Boinc client from boinc.berkely.edu is version 6.12.34 (both Windows and linux).

Why is the WCG client not updated?

I'm wondering if it's safe to upgrade to the generic 6.12.34 client or if it's better to stay with the 6.10.58 WCG version?

Re: Latest version of Boinc client

6.10.58 is audited and certified by WCG/IBM and is deemed stable.
The 6.12.34 is not.

Stay with 6.10.58

Re: Latest version of Boinc client

Hi,

I tried 6.12.34 - but decided to downgrade again eventually. I don't quite like the new menu (message tab is now a new window). Also, there seems to be an issue with "high priority" tasks: repair jobs are not started immediately, using the same settings as my older Boinc.

I'll keep on using 6.10.60. The only reason I don't use the WCG Boinc is because I want to have a 64-bit client.

Upgrading is, however, safe. But it's always a good idea to make a backup copy of your Boinc data directory - just in case. As far as i observed, applications already started with the older Boinc version continue w/o problems after upgrading.

Re: Latest version of Boinc client

Hello marco69v,
BOINC is just a manager. It downloads work units, starts them running on project programs, pauses them and uploads result files. Whether BOINC is 32 bits or 64 bits does not matter. If your OS can run 64-bit code, a 32-bit BOINC will download a work unit and run it on a 64-bit project program. It does not matter if BOINC is 32-bits or 64-bits. What matters is the project program. We are working to provide projects with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the project program, but this takes time.

CEP only has 32-bit application for now, of the WCG-applications only C4CW is 64-bit.

Client-wise, as long as it's v6.10.xx or later, it doesn't matter if it's 32-bit or 64-bit, you'll get 64-bit-application if one is available.

For anyone using older clients than v6.10.xx on the other hand, only 64-bit clients will get the 64-bit application.

Re: Latest version of Boinc client

And, as has been mentioned several times on these forums, a system that is both 32+64 bit capable would get tested [whatever, 10-20 tasks for each bit size] which of the 2 is more per-formant, and then being server decided which is best for a host. Some members reported the 32 bit of C4CW running faster than the 64 bit version.

Don't recollect if the server upgrade in progress will enable this. knreed has commented on this previously, but don't have that post on hand what's on and what timeline to think of.

v6.12.xx added the new Notices-tab, there project can post news that show-up in the client, in case of errors some of them can show-up in notices-tab making them easier to spot, and there will also be news about new client-versions. There's also various fixes to work-requests and scheduling over v6.10.xx. So atleast in my opinion there's no reason to downgrade.
