MM, care to share any task times? I'll get some but will this do for now? I was doing a lot of testing so this is essentially a 1/2 days work: Statistics Date..........Total Run Time....Points Generated...ResultsReturned 04/20/2012 0:016:03:37:20........69,046...............118 ![]() |

I have been far from impressed with recent CPU's, especially for mainstream/desktop crunching, so I was interested in the performance of these more recent processors on various projects here. I'm not going to invest in one of these rigs myself, too rich for me, but I imagine they might be of interest to some crunchers, especially those interested in reducing electric, heat or density. So a comparison against some other CPU's might help people make the right decision. I've only been running a few tasks each on my systems, but it's a start. I will add the other projects results when they come in. i7-2600K @4.19GHz (W7x64, 8GB DDR3, HD5850), 7threads used + GPU: CFSW 2.7h (2h 42min), 90Boinc Credits (~33/h) SN2S 4.5h average, ~125Boinc Credits (~28/h) (times varied from 6h down to 3h and credit varied similarly, so not very accurate) CEP2 7h on average, ~230 credits (~33/h) HCMD2 (far too variable for accuracy; 0min up to 2h) HFCC 5.4h average, ~178 credits (~33/h) ... I'm still of the belief that the 2600K is the best bang for the buck system for WCG.Looking forward to GPU usage for the "average" person with one cruncher I'd do one of them with one of the top vid cards and make sure you have a top end psu and cooling. Microcenter has 2600K's at $199.99 but limited availability. Systems like mine are realistically out of reach of 99% of the people. I couldn't afford this. More of an engineering exercise to see what is possible and just lucky enough to be able to do so. For those that can, this system with the Supermicro case,PSU and X9DAi board at app $850.00( HS's are an option) in the USA is a deal IMO.. Excellently laid out case design, all prewired and done very well, a 80+PSU, and the X9DAi board is a sweet one. I've had this running at 100% load in a 80F room for 2 solid days and temps in the low 60's. Bigger fans could easily drop those temps by 5C I think.. The killer is the cpu cost. E5-2687W's at $1900.00 each kills the deal. I added up the cost of doing this retail: 2-E5-2687W's: $3800.00 SM Case, psu, and board: $850.00 8x2 gig DDR3-1333 ECC REG: App $700.00 GTX570 vid card: $350.00 DVD-RW drive: $25.00 hard drive: varies but call it $150.00 for a decent one Total: $5875.00.. Now there are some people this will appeal to. Monstrous power for one machine if thats what you need and app 3.5 times the computational power of a 2600K at 4200MHz but for a cruncher? How many 2600K systems can you build for that $5875.00? The answer is LOTS more than 3.5 2600K systems..LOTS! ![]() ![]() |

How many PCIe power cables does it have? I could not find that detail on the supermicro site. Also, what connectors? 6 pin? 6+2 pin?

Just an update for ref: i7-2600K @4.19GHz (W7x64, 8GB DDR3, HD5850), 7threads used + GPU: CFSW 2.7h (2h 42min), 90Boinc Credits (~33/h) SN2S 4.5h average, ~125Boinc Credits (~28/h) (times varied from 6h down to 3h and credit varied similarly, so not very accurate) GFAM 6.26h, 200Boinc Credits (~32/h) DSFL 6.15h, CEP2 7h on average, ~230 credits (~33/h) HCMD2 (far too variable for accuracy; 0min up to 2h) HFCC 5.4h average, ~178 credits (~33/h) HCC 1.05h average, ~34.4credits (~33/h) It would be interesting to know if the E5-2687W's offer any specific advantage for one or more projects. Even compared to the E5-2690's it offers an 13.5% performance increase when it comes to WinRAR compression, and for extraction it's 31%. There doesn't seem to be any additional 'Advanced Technologies' that would make it faster, just the Visualization technologies you would expect from server kit, but it has plenty of cache memory, can support quad RAM, and doesn't have to facilitate an on chip GPU. I can't give you a lot more info just yet. Have been letting it just run WCG the past 3 days to get a feel for what it can do. I see it as app 135,000PPD doing a good mix of the projects. Yesterday it got 160,000+points but that was because the Validation server was not behaving right the day before. ![]() |

I am starting to think space, volume etc.. I will give it a detailed thought. ![]() ![]() |
