How about a ribbon? just kidding of course. But, from a beginners point of view, not being able to see individual contribution was rather.... Don't know what to say here, but I would have liked to see how much the top INDIVIDUAL was contributing.
Tell you what tomcast, you make it to first, I'll send you some prize money ![]() |

Ribbon? competition? No, It's about personal satisfaction! It's about the warm and fuzzy feeling one gets from knowing that he/she has contributed something worthwhile. It's about being able to look at the stats and saying to oneself "good Job" or MY contribution is helping to eradicate disease, or to further scientific development. The skewed stats format just doesn't lend itself to a warm and fuzzy. Every human needs to feel appreciated.

but behind every corporation is an individual. Someone, somewhere decided to pitch distributed computing to Sony etc. They then had the perseverance to push to such a point that this corporation put it's resources on the line here. For these corporations, you are talking about a whole lot of money. Infrastructure, buildings, power. This is all money that they don't have to contribute and has come out of their profits.
----------------------------------------Personally, I am one guy who has put in nearly 25 years of computing in 18 months. I have 17 cores running on machines that I own and run mainly at home. However, I have anything from 40 to several hundred cores working at any one time. Probably over 200 as we speak. I have done this through talking to friends who trust me and allowing me to install WCG on their computers at both home and work. I have rescued old computers, refurbed them, added parts and then given them away to people who allow me to run WCG. Some of my work places allow me to run it on banks of computers from time to time. I have to tread a fine line between getting what I want and keeping them happy. I have put a metric ***-ton of work into getting WCG out there and although I talk about my successes, the road is littered with failures too. I know that I will never be able to compete with a corporation, but all I do is focus on trying to improve my contribution. Would you rate me as a corporation? *edited to appropriate forum language - ErikaT [Edit 1 times, last edit by ErikaT at Apr 24, 2012 4:40:03 PM] |

@VCD683s - personally I would rate you as both an individual AND a Team. As a Corporation? No. but don't forget corps get to deduct ALL their expenses from taxes etc. read my previous post... so their cost is possible much lower than ours as individuals...
btw, HIGH-FIVE on your contributions, I appreciate them |

and if my meager network ever goes public and I actually start making some money from it then I will be the first to change my status from individual to corporate

Agreed. Separating out the corporations would be a great idea. This way we could see the INDIVIDUAL contributions. Very good idea. EDIT: It's interesting that this was brought up. When I first joined, one of the very first things I did, was go and look at the leader boards to see how much the top individual was contributing. Once I saw that you could not filter out the corporations, colleges, etc., it felt, to me, like it took away some of the individual competition. I know it's about the science, and I enjoy crunching here. However, hard to get a feel of one's contributions, as an individual, compared to others, when you have IBM, colleges, Sony, and many others in the mix. Food for thought from a cruncher with less than a year in. I don't care about this stuff. I contribute 1M points a month to various WCG projects as well as POEM and FAH by running at night and on weekends when electricity rates are lower (not low, just lower!). I then stop processing when I accumulate 1M points (around 21/22 of the month), look at the message boards daily, hoping for HCC GPU to appear and get on with other tasks. ![]() ![]() crunching, crunching, crunching. Interesting. The discussion has veered towards Corporations VS Individuals. In fact the question was Teams and Individuals.
----------------------------------------Another point was the split bewteen corporations and individuals. If we take the first 100 daily contributors yesterday were you find the large corporate contributors and a few "special individuals" posting over 300'000 points per day, you get a total of round 200 million points. The total number of points yesterday was 650 million points. Conclusion, the Individuals are the main contributors by a factor of at least of 3. But we must recognize that the large corporations contribution are paramount, simply because without a large one like IBM, WCG would simply not exist. Everybody is needed, from the smallest to the largest. ![]() ![]() |

Agreed.
It was just out of curiosity when I first began to see what the top individuals were contributing. I didn't/don't care, was just curious. Crunching on..... |
