First let my apologize for discussing politics. I am not a big fan of discussing such things in forums, especially at WCG. However, this one has bothered me enough, and to all USA users I felt it was necessary to spread the word.
----------------------------------------CISPA will bypass your 4th amendment rights of unreasonable search and seizure, since the government will not longer be required to provide warrants for your online information. Instead the corporations will freely hand it to them, and you can be watched for the rest of your life. Even if you post something sarcastic like, "I'm gonna kill my bf/gf when they get home, ahhh he left the toilet seat up... forgot my birthday.. literally anything. If a corporation wants to give this to the governament, you and anyone you've been in contact with can be watched indefinately. Many companies have given their approval on this bill, since, unlike SOPA, they cannot be held liable for users actions. Under the guise of national security, this bill aims to make the internet their property. Your accounts could be blocked, websites blocked, if they believed ANY threat was posed. I know I sound like a conspiracy nut right now, but please take this seriously. The governement recently built a data storage facility in Utah capable of holding a yottabyte ![]() If you wish, please sign this petition, http://act.demandprogress.org/letter/cispa/?akid=1307.1458750.fibb9e&rd=1 Again, I am truly sorry that I posted this. If I violated rules, admins/mods, please remove. I am not intending to cause problems on this site, but I feel this strongly about this bill, and the need to spread the word. It passed the House last night. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Apr 27, 2012 2:02:34 PM] |

I am truly sorry that I posted this. Nice try. If you were truly apologetic, then you would not have started the thread. It's a fallacy to think you can apologize in advance.Of the nearly 100,000 daily crunchers here at WCG, there will be at least 3 who want to discuss your American-centred politics. |

Why give him a hard time about it. It is a chat room to post just about anything. This affects all americans. Other governments are doing the same thing. Pretty sure our government has been doing this under the table anyway.

This is definitely a massive undertaking. I personally don't care if the government looks at my digital information because I live a pretty boring life and my information would probably put them to sleep. I do understand the fourth amendment concerns and the "Big Brother" concerns. They really do not need to be poking about in everyone's business.
----------------------------------------Let's see. A yottabyte - 10^24 bytes. This would take 10^12 one terabyte drives to achieve or 333 billion 3 terabyte drives. The best estimate for world production of storage I could find was about 200 million drives produced per quarter which would be 800 million per year. At that rate it would take over 350 years of world production of storage to fill this place. But you say they are probably not using spinning drives for their storage, but solid state. I could not find a reliable estimate for world production of solid state media, but once again I am guessing the capacity they are planning exceeds world production by a massive amount. Maybe we should all buy stock in storage vendors of every sort, because this appears to be a pie-in-the-sky venture unless they are using some super secret storage medium. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yottabyte http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article...n_says_research_firm.html Just my 2 cents worth. Cheers

From the Wired article in regards to the yottabyte storage (comments given from the William Binney, who was a former senior NSA crypto-mathematician)
----------------------------------------1) It has it's own 65 Megawatt power facility. 2) It is constantly expanding its storage capabilities with it's 4-25,000 sq ft facilities which house rows and rows of servers. 3) A Department of Defense report stated, "The Pentagon is attempting to expand its worldwide communications network, known as the Global Information Grid, to handle yottabytes of information." In needs that capacity the report says, because CISCO estimates by 2015, 966 exabytes of internet traffic will be produced yearly. 4) Total size of Utah center = 1 million sq. feet In regards to me apologizing, I am truly appologetic that I HAD to post this. I'm sorry it's come to this in my country. I truly am. I'm disgusted with my government, and am sorry I had (felt compelled to, & that this is even an issue in the first place) I shouldn't have to in the sense that it's obviously not right. And in regards to this SPECIFIC instance, yes it's American-centered, which I clearly stated. But this TOPIC is not. UK is looking at monitoring every email, text message, web browsing history, etc. themselves. Heck, by their overly broad definition of cyber-security (anything they feel can hurt America), me crunching for C4CW for China could be considered anti-american and I could be monitored for helping the Chinese advance technology. Whether or not you accept my apology is up to you entirely. I feel disgusted that this topic in general is even being discussed by various governments, but seeing as how I am not a fan of Facebook, Twitter, etc. This forum is really the only one where I felt I could let others know. If you don't care about it, or it doesn't effect you YET, fine. But please do not say my apology is insincere. EDIT: Thought yottabyte storage was complete, but the Center is, with whatever amount of storage they have currently, and plan on constantly expanding it to yottabyte (being the end goal). Oh, and they recently figured out a way to make drives with 1TB per sq. inch. Read it in this months Maximum PC issue. 2nd EDIT: SSD 2.5 capacity has AT LEAST reached 1.6 TB for 2.5 form factor http://www.geek.com/articles/chips/smart-intr...-6tb-1000mbs-ssd-2011084/ And this was a year ago. Of the nearly 100,000 daily crunchers here at WCG, there will be at least 3 who want to discuss your American-centred politics. And you'll be able to post more anti America drivel.
In 1969 I took an oath to defend and protect the U S Constitution against all enemies, both foreign and Domestic. There was no expiration date.

Of the nearly 100,000 daily crunchers here at WCG, there will be at most 3 who would not want to see astrolabe get booted out of the WCG forum.; Ok let's try to be all more diplomacy prone. An 5pot, stop with all these excuses. Just give your point, as simple as that. ![]() ![]() |

Point taken Hypernova:
If you wish to let your Senator know that you do not approve of this new legislation, the link that I posted above is an easy way to do so. Crunching on for a better tomorrow |

Probably to late to call anyone. This is getting pushed through like Cheney did with patriot act. Don't think us little people can do much about it.

We did manage to stop SOPA with the online petitions, although I do believe that Google and Wiki putting messages on their sites is what did the job.
My girlfriend actually posted on her Facebook account about this bill, and her, as well as many of her friends stated that they will delete their Facebook accounts if this goes through. I also do not believe us little people have much say in the matter, but I refuse to go down without a "fight". A personal one anyways. I would at least like to know, myself, that I tried. |
