What is a Million points worth?

There was a time where with a million points a day you would be around 10-12 position in the daily ranking.
Nowadays you end up at 16th position or more. In fact 18th if we take the latest yesterday count.
Very clearly there is some inflation and the value of a point is going down. wink

P.S.
To avoid any misinterpretation, like considering that this would decrease project values etc... I was meaning the value of a point to rank. In absolute the point has no value, except the emotional, symbolic value each of us want to give to it. In that view ups and downs of the point value is not an issue.

Re: What is a Million points worth?

If you take a look at the "member" stats you may notice an interesting facet - 7 of the top 12 or so are actually groups mixed in. IBM, Marist College, etc. In my opinion individual stats should be separated from group stats, only saying

Re: What is a Million points worth?

I thought Team stats and Individual member stats were separate.
A question to admin here. What are exactly the rules to be applied ?

Re: What is a Million points worth?

@kffitzgerald, "group" is not a concept understood by WCG, and it might be difficult to define it.
@Hypernova, technically speaking, IBM, marist_college, etc are WCG Members, not WCG Teams, so, yes, Team stats and Individual member stats are separate.
Perhaps another way of phrasing your thought is, should the sysadmin of a large organisation be able to register several thousand machines under a single Member account? Well, yes, that's WCG policy. How otherwise would you unambiguously draw a line and not prevent a Member registering say 2 machines, or 9, or 36?

Re: What is a Million points worth?

the pc's registered under a specific organization (i.e IBM, Marist, etc) represent a corporate entity. the sysadmin does NOT personally own them. I am currently running 5 systems, three of which I personally built from scratch and the other two are personal (family) laptops. Just maybe there should be three levels: Individual (owns his own pc's), Teams (individual who own their own PC's) but aggregate their results towards team statistics and a third designation: Corporate. Personally, I find it absurd that my meager stats are in the same stats category as IBM, Marist College, Sony, etc

But, its not about you, its about getting the job done. Without the large organizations lending their systems, the science projects might never get done. after all, it really should not be a competition (even though we try to make it so).

One other problem...ME! I am an individual with 15 pc's with a total of 35 cpu cores and 13 gpu's all crunching here from my home. For you to even try to compete with me is silly, I have years of time on my side, which over time will be offset by your newer faster pc's. But for now you just can't keep up with me, I too work on pc's and build my own from old used parts. I am NOT bragging, I am just saying that even with your idea of the cutoff there are extremes. I am now retired and have enough disposable income to support a $600+ a month electric bill, that is why I can do what I do. You, I am guessing, are still young and in your prime earning years, making my number of pc's silly and unaffordable.

Re: What is a Million points worth?

@Mikey - like you I am also retired, not at the top of my earning years. The PC's I have built are all I7-2600K units with either 8 or 16gb ram. I would expect my stats to be compared to yours and not the likes of IBM, Sony or college systems. And no while my computing power is not in your league I think that if you compare my stats you will see that you have almost two more years in the crunch but yet my results are right up there.I still like what I said before - three levels: Corporate, team and individual. It doesn't matter if the individual registers one or twenty pc's - he/she is still the owner and pays the electric bill for those... vedy simple, vedy easy

Re: What is a Million points worth?

@astrolabe- totally agree with Mikey, if it's all abut the large corporate enterprises then I guess us little guys don't even count. Seriously get with it, it's the little guys that drive the world not corporations, would be interesting to actually get a comparison of how much the corporate world vs. individuals "contribute" to WCG. as individuals WE don't get to write-off our electric use as an expense, we can't depreciate the cost of our pc's nor can we write off our time supporting our computing environment. Think about it Astro three levels of reporting would display individual contributions nicely...

Re: What is a Million points worth?

Agreed. Separating out the corporations would be a great idea. This way we could see the INDIVIDUAL contributions. Very good idea.

EDIT: It's interesting that this was brought up. When I first joined, one of the very first things I did, was go and look at the leader boards to see how much the top individual was contributing. Once I saw that you could not filter out the corporations, colleges, etc., it felt, to me, like it took away some of the individual competition. I know it's about the science, and I enjoy crunching here. However, hard to get a feel of one's contributions, as an individual, compared to others, when you have IBM, colleges, Sony, and many others in the mix.

Food for thought from a cruncher with less than a year in.
