CEP2 Download error

I have just recently setup a RAMDISK and moved all my BOINC computations to use it. Since the fresh re-install of BOINC, I have not been able to get a successful download of a single CEP2 application.

My machine is a core i7-2600 and 8GB of RAM, using a 3GB RAMDISK for storage and has over 2.8GB of it free. Before re-installing, I have had no problems running the cep2 application on this computer. I am using the 7.0.28 BOINC x64 freshly downloaded today.

Below are some examples of my errors:

On the upside, my SN2S apps are processing about 15-20% faster so far. Anyone have an idea as to what I can do to make this work? My office computer nevers shuts off and is idle over 75% of the time, so I would like to include CEP2 work in the processing.

Re: CEP2 Download error

Are you using any file compression on your RAMDISK (e.g., NTFS compression)? I would try turning it off.

Otherwise, maybe the new BOINC 7.0.36 would fix it, though that is just a guess. But I haven't seen any problems with it on my ramdisk, using Win7 64-bit.

And while we are on the subject of ramdisks, remember to set "Leave at least 0 Gigabytes Disk Space Free", and also use 100% of the disk space, or else you won't be able to use all of the ramdisk space. You will need to do that both in the BOINC preferences, and also in your WCG Device Profile (in the Device Manager web page).

Re: CEP2 Download error

Well, I made the adjustments you recommended and it was able to download the qchem application now. will see shortly how much the performance gain is when there are multiple instances of the CEP2 app running at the same time.

Thank you for the guidance.

Re: CEP2 Download error

Well, after a weeked of running 1 CEP2 unit at a time, the RAMDISK did not give any difinitive improvement while running 7 SN2S at the same time. I have upped my CEP2 units to 2, but I am concerned the relatively small RAMDISK (3GB) I have created for all these taskes will overflow with the data generated. I rarely seem to make it past step 12 before the remaining tasks get skipped anyway, see to consistently get a RC x00000005 after that stage, not sure if that is normal. Usually takes between 4 and 6 hours to get to that point depending on the WU.

Oh, and for those curious. AMD has a free RAMDISK for small RAMDISK creation, without AMD RAM, you can create a maximum of a 4GB RAMDISK. But, if there is no real improvement for CEP2 and the SN2S jobs are only marginally faster (4-5% now), I may just remove the RAMDISK completely so I can run multiple (4x) CEP2s at the same time.

Re: CEP2 Download error

I don't think you need to worry about overflow. The CEP2 work units need to see at least 2 GB of ramdisk free, or they will not download at all. With 3 GB, I expect that you will have no trouble having 2 CEPs downloaded at a time, and a 4 GB ramdisk should give you at least 4 at a time, along with your other projects (the size of each WU is much less than the minimum requirements suggest).

I don't use a ramdisk for performance, but to save my SSD. If you were to run CEP2 on all 8 virtual cores of a Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge, you would write well over 1 TB of data per day. The SSD might last for a few months, but I wouldn't trust it beyond that. If you just average 1 running at at time, I don't think you need the protection of the ramdisk though.

However, if you use a ramdisk you really need a backup power supply (UPS) with automatic shutdown in case of a power outage, since you would lose all the contents of the ramdisk in that case. Also, you need a stable machine that does not crash, or you lose the work then also. But I leave my machine on 24/7, and have a UPS anyway, so it is not a problem for me.
