Well, I finally broke down and bought a ATI 7700 GPU.
----------------------------------------Since it was PCI3, and my motherboard wasn't I went ahead and bought a new one of those two. Since the new motherboard has an 1155 and my old one didn't, I had to buy a new processor to go with it - the I7-3770K. I had to throw in some 1866 MHz memory, too. With the existing SSD hard drive I had, Windows now takes 11 seconds to load from the time I press the power button! The new ATI card crunches WU's and I can still use my computer (unlke the nVidia). Needless to say, I am very happy with this rig, so far. Even cooler, I plugged in my existing Raid 5 disks and the raid controller saw the existing setup. My old motherboard and this one both use an Intel raid controller, so I was able to copy off the stuff I wanted before creating a new partition. My last motherboard was 8 years old, and half of the caps were bulging, so this was a late Christmas present to myself. Hopefully, once my wu's get out of jail, I will be in the 100K's everyday.

It would appear that everyone should have gotten an email from WCG regarding Major Outage Notice: Grid Offline 3:00 UTC Jan 22 - 3:00 UTC Jan 23 which happens to be hours after a short outage for a DB2 fixpack. One recommendation: Bump your cache to a bit over a day's worth. 1.5 days would be good so your machines would go into the outage with enough to make it through without running out of work. The half day would allow room for when your machines last get work before the outage and allow for the possibility that the outage might run a tad over or that, while back up, the servers may be getting hammered at first. One other thing. With the database down, I am expecting that there won't be access to the team stats during the outage even though the website will be up. To be safe, it's probably going to be best to grab our numbers for the 21st right after they are ready. Normally, that's right about 02:00 UTC so there's just a one hour window on Monday night to grab them. Unfortunately, my schedule on Monday night won't have me where I can get to them before the outage starts. I'd like to get a couple of volunteers to grab them during that one hour window. I'm looking for two due to the short window. It only takes a minute to do it so if you know that you'll be available between 02:00 UTC and 03:00 UTC on the 22nd (Monday evening here in the US), I'd really appreciate it. You may want to force your machines to report any completed work to the servers towards the latter part of Monday, especially if the WU's are close to the deadline. BOINC will eventually report any completed work so it normally would end up the same in the long run but doing a manual update on Monday would avoid the possibility of them getting marked Too Late once the outage is over if they're near the deadline. So this is 8PM Monday night for those of us in Central Time zone US? That being the case, I will be one of the 2 or 3 volunteers. Who Else? |

Great. That sounds like a neat rig. I love the I7 line and the 3770K seems to me to be the most cost effective. And...if you are of a mind, you can overclock it a bit. Congrats and enjoy! |

With that card, mobo, CPU setup you could put out 300-350k per day with that cruncher alone by running multiple GPU tasks simultaneously. Just some food for thought. ![]()
