I am finding that while Boinc works in the background when needed, the GPUs do not or I have the settings wrong. For the most part, I use the default settings except for indicating that the GPUs are to be used.
----------------------------------------Without using the GPUs, the manual use of the computer does not know that Boinc is in use. With the GPU in use, the manual use of the computer is virtually impossible. I'm sure this is not unknown, but I thought I should post it. Another observation is that with Win7 the manual operations is a lot better than with a Linux OS. Gandalf ![]() ![]() O/S -LinuxMint 64-bit, Release 13 (maya). Yes we know and many threads discuss this, fingerpointing NVidia cards which most all are just not very good at OpenCL processing. This knowledge and GPU crunching in general makes the default GPU setting to only process when the system is not in use i.e. the recommended setting [when GPU crunching at WCG] is to untick "Use GPU while computer is in use"
That said, if your system has 2 GPU's you can configure with the cc_config.xml to only use one card for GPU crunching and the other for displaying the desktop activity, i.e. configuring so you can do GPU computing 24/7. See http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Cc_config.xml for configuring this file and the new app_config.xml (only client 7.0.42 and up). Members will surely pitch in for any tuning you need assistance on. |

And you do know that the NVidia 6xx series is worse than the 5xx series?

Your best solution if you want to run 2 nvidia cards in the same system is to let 1 crunch and let 1 run your graphics. Probably the only solution to eliminate the video lag. Nvidia's poor OpenCl driver support is the problem. As BladeD noted, the 6xx series cards suffer more than the 5xx cards.

Thanks for the useful input of info, everyone.
----------------------------------------That info calls for the next question. You spoke of the bad crunching GPU (mine), so what is the best crunching GPU? Best because it's backed up with imperial data. I know that that is an interesting question. One problem: the client 7.0.42 is not released yet and I'm not knowledgeable enough to be a Boinc tester. I have to ask questions, not answer them. ![]() ![]() O/S -LinuxMint 64-bit, Release 13 (maya). DE: Cinnamon [Edit 1 times, last edit by Gandalf_PCHF at Jan 15, 2013 7:20:34 PM] |

The best is the AMD 7900 series. Keep in mind this advice is for the HCC project only which is coded in Open CL. You can reference the graphic card performance thread for the comparisons.

In terms of computing power, definitely yes. In terms of low electricity consumption with still good computing power I would recommend 7750 or 7770. Gentlemen: FYI - My interest is in crunching for the WCG Cancer Research mainly.

nanoprobe - I managed to get one of my GPUs on one of my computers freed up so now I only have a total of three GPUs crunching. A small cost for the sake of my sanity. Oops, to late. There it goes. I am know legally no, no , no not that.

FAIK, at least with the ATI Catalyst CC utility, you can pre-assign which GPU a program uses. I've specified for Firefox and various Office apps to use the [power saving] on CPU GPU. Zero slug in my corner.
