Windows run times v. Linux?

The 6.25 work units are running a little under 3 hours on my i7-3770 (not overclocked) on Win7 64-bit (BOINC 7.0.64 x64). This seems reasonably fast, but this is one of those VINA projects where Linux has an advantage, but I have not seen a comparison of how much.

Thanks to anyone who can compare them.

Here is a thread for you to review.

Re: Windows run times v. Linux?

Thanks, but for such a long post it was remarkably unhelpful, and the last entry was even before DSFL 64 bit was released.

Re: Windows run times v. Linux?

I posted a couple here but they were too few and very old now.
But from what I see with my computer, they are currently with approximately the same runtime as GFAM, that is, most finish within 2 CPU hours and only a few ever reach more than 2.5 hours.

This on Linux Mint 14 X64.

Now why this one was not seen when bumped to near top, just days ago, I will not prod to Q&A... the modified title of this thread tells it all: SN2S+DSFL+GFAM: Anyone else seeing the 64bit ...inux compared to Windows?

It's a QED case for me, no further debate required ;O)

Re: Windows run times v. Linux?

I'm getting work units on my 4Ghz FX-8120 to finish over twice as fast as compared to Windows. I took a picture for #showyourdesktopfriday which shows the speedy return rates.

Many sets seem to run ~3 hours or less per core out of 8 cores, with some sets running twice as long. I notice all of my wingmen are significantly slower than I am at processing a work unit, which is rare considering the majority of users have Intel processors and Intel cores have higher single-threaded performance

Re: Windows run times v. Linux?

Is there any way to tell which project would benefit from running Linux over Windows, other than knowing if they are running VINA?

Re: Windows run times v. Linux?

In general, it's always been:

If you have an AMD processor, Linux will always perform better. If you take a look at the GCC compiler which is used to compile software on Linux, then look at the inferior compilers on Windows; it makes even more sense that apps on Linux perform faster.

Other than that, it also comes down to how a Linux or Windows version was coded. If both are coded equally, Linux will always run better, but that's not guaranteed. You just have to try and see yourself.

I'd venture a guess that the developers desperately attempt to optimize the Windows version as much as possible because the majority of systems are running Windows here. However, at the same time, many of the people running these scientific applications off the grid are running Linux, such as those supercomputers.

I have my suspicion that Windows will fall within a decade and be overcome by Linux. We might even see Microsoft Linux.
