New Computer - Migrate My ID?

Hi all,

So I received a new computer from work, and wanted to "migrate" to it since I need to return my old one.

I think I did all the steps needed to wind down the old one, and the agent and activities are running on my new computer.

But am a bit baffled by the new one in terms of how to tell the agent that I am "MilesBFree" so it should report my stats using that ID. When I look at "MY Statistics" on worldcommunitygrid.org it shows no activity in the last two weeks or so, which is when I shut my old computer down.

Is there a simple way to go into the BOINC manager and just tell it what my ID and passwd are?

I tried things such as attaching to various Account Managers but they all reject my login. (I just logged in here so I know those are correct).

I am guessing the answer should be very simple and a sort of doh! moment...

Which version of BOINC Manager are you using? I just checked and I can see your stats under your userid.

How 'doh' would you want it to be ;?

Tools > Add Project > www.worldcommunitygrid.org > Next > existing member/user > member name / member password > Next. If succeeded it will tell you.

Re: New Computer - Migrate My ID?

Hi Rob,

Version 6.10.58

I tried to add a project as you described, and it told me I was already attached to that project.

I just went back to My Statistics and it is now showing an the last update was done a few hours ago. Earlier today it showed the last update as being done on May 12 which is over 2 weeks ago.

So it looks like it is now working as I was expecting.

And your directions were spot on, the doh! level was just right - thank you!

Re: New Computer - Migrate My ID?

OK, so it looks like my issue wasn't fixed. The "My Statistics" page said that my stats were last updated 2 hours ago, so I thought it was working.

However, if I look farther down it says that my "Last Results Returned" were May 16, about 2 months ago, right after I shut off my old laptop for good.

My new laptop is obviously doing SOMETHING, as it shows it doing lots of stuff in the logs, and the screensaver shows it running.

The issue is that the new laptop doesn't show up on my stats. It would be nice to know that the work it appears to be doing was being uploaded when completed.

It appears to be still connected to the World Community Grid project, since when I try to add it as a new project it says I am already connected.

Does each agent get assigned some sort of number or ID? Do I need to find it in the agent, and add it to my profile here? If so how do I do that?

TIA!

Re: New Computer - Migrate My ID?

One more potential clue:

"My Statistics" says I have 2 Device Installations. When I click on that link, it only shows what is likely my old laptop, since the date it shows for the last results returned date was May 16.

When I click on the laptop ID to drill down it shows the stats were updated on May 21 (which is odd that that is a different date).

It really looks like I need to be able to tell the WCG site here that I have a new device.

Simple View or Advanced View Project, hit Project Commands > Properties or Select WCG, then Properties button on left and it will tell you for whom the PC is working.

We've been through this so many times ["received a new computer from work"], to find your Boss [likely IBM] took over. In Help there's instruction to get back to crunch under own account [think there's even a video].

Re: New Computer - Migrate My ID?

Thanks Rob.

I believe the Help entry is for the question dealing with changing the member name under which the computer is registered:

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=namepwprob#371

This did seem to work this time but the title for that help entry makes it seem like it does not apply - I didn't want to change the member name (in effect moving a PC from one person to another), I wanted to change the computer for a single member. But I see how it does apply - to some extent I am moving a new computer from no member to a "new" one.

The key to fixing it isn't to make sure that the computer is attached to a project (which I did confirm back in May). The new computer will attach but not be associated with a member. So the fix is not to make sure the computer is connected to a project but rather to disconnect the computer from the project and then reconnect it. What that actually does is to more or less log the computer out and when the computer reconnects, the MEMBER must log in again and that is the action that fixes the issue; that will associate the computer with the member.

WCG / grid experts may say that I am not thinking about it correctly and that the member is not logging out and in, but to a newb or non-expert, that is the thought process that makes sense.

If this comes up way too often as Rob indicates, my suggestion is to pander to the rookies :) and simply state it in their terms: Log out and log back in.

1. "Log out" by disconnecting from the project
2. "Log in" by reconnecting to the project
3. Check your stats page, but note that new results will be updated probably after a few hours or a day or more as the computer needs to finish a task and upload results - that will confirm that you have fixed the issue.

Re: New Computer - Migrate My ID?

Forgot to note: if the new computer does connect and uploads results, you will also see the number of Devices Installed increment as well. Mine went from 2 before the fix to 3 after it. That will tell you definitively that the new computer is now associated with the member.
