Nvidia guidance please

I'm building a new system it will be Crosshair based with 2 HD7970 3Gb
shed loads of RAM and 2 spare GPU slots!

My question is - Which Nvidia GPU is comparable to the HD7970?

The Crosshair can take both with Crossfire and SLI enabed on their respective cards. I want to play Fable 3 that I was given as a present ages ago (or it seams like it!)

I also want to be able to do Nvidia crunching

What would you guys recommend?

Re: Nvidia guidance please

The Geforce GTX 770 looks like a good candidate...

Re: Nvidia guidance please

Just to make sure you are aware....currently there are no GPU-enabled projects active on WCG at least...

But anyway, aren't the older GTX5xx "Fermi" based cards a lot better suited for GPGPU (crunching)? Nvidia removed a lot of GPGPU resources when they moved on to consumer GTX6xx series, unfortunately. Games though, is another matter.

Also to keep in mind if overclocking is that generally the AMD 7950 and 7970 are better percentual overclockers than the GTX 670/680 from the reviews I've read. On the other hand Nvidia cards don't draw equally much power as AMD cards...although AMD cards have really good OpenCL/DirectCompute capabilities in comparison to GTX6xx series.

Have a look at this chart and you'll see a tendency at the top:

Good luck in building your machine! :)

EDIT: some spelling corrected...

Re: Nvidia guidance please

Many thanks Flodisar, yes, I'm aware there are no GPU projects on WCG at the moment. The primary reason for looking at an Nvidia card is the game I was given some time ago secondary is the crunching in this case

I have the 2 x HD7970 for crunching, so I'm not really bothered if the Nvidia card is not as good at crunching

Re: Nvidia guidance please

Does that game work on the HD7970 GPU?

Everywhere I look it lists both. What version of Windows are running?

Fable 3 on a HD7850.

Re: Nvidia guidance please

Delays, delays, delays, the company I ordered from hasn't come up with the goods, while it was the cheapest, they didn't even tell me there was a delay! I've now cancelled the order, currently awaiting a refund. I will name and shame after the refund is completed!

So have to find another supplier and good price.

Watch this space, I think I may rethink the specs too!
