I updated my Boinc client like I always do. Make a backup of the boinc data directory, uninstall old version, install new. When I started the new version after the update there were no projects listed or tasks running. When I checked the Boinc data directory was gone. It's hidden by default and is not removed during an uninstall but for some reason it was gone. I dropped my backup into the folder but the client will not see it. I uninstalled everything again and did another reinstall. I let the install go as I always do using the default locations. When I look the the BOINC data directory folder is not there after a clean install. I've tried everything I can think of but the client will not recognize the copy of the data directory I have. Anyone have any ideas as to what happened and how to fix it?

The old BOINC directory may still be there, even it it was inadvertently deleted by your rogue gremlin. If you have any "undelete" software around you may still be able to find the original directory and restore it if those sectors have not been overwritten. Maybe use an old copy of Norton Utilities or similar. Good luck.

What version of BOINC did you install? And which version were you using previously? IIRC, there were some major changes made when they went from 6.x to 7.x.
Could they have moved the default boinc data directory to a different location? You should be able to look at the event log and see where the current version is looking for the boinc data directory. On the Linux box that I am running today, it is the fifth line from the top of the event log. What happens if you re-install the previous version? Is it able to find the old data directory? Or did you try that? Another option is to do a search of the hard drive to find out where the BOINC directories are located. I'm guessing, but something here may trigger a thought for you. |

I am with captainjack. What OS, BOINC versions, etc.? If you want to continue processing the same work units, exit BOINC and just install over the old BOINC and hope the installation program was built correctly to handle this. If you want the security of a complete uninstall and install, first complete all the current work units. You seem to have a habit of leaping from one horse to the other in midstream. I have never read a guarantee that this method will work.

For some unknown reason the data directory got moved/deleted this time. Have no idea why and have tried everything I can think of to fix it.

I say Save your existing good data files then uninstall boinc. Then...
----------------------------------------Create the folders where you want BOINC to be ( I use c:\BOINC for the program and c:\BOINC\BOINCDATA for the data ) Next copy your previously saved data files into the data folder. (you did say that you saved these from before) then Install the BOINC version you want but use the advanced options during the install process to put it where you want it. No more searching because the install process puts it wherever you decide ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by OldChap at Jul 7, 2013 11:55:12 PM] |

*face/palm*
----------------------------------------Fixed it. I left \boinc off the end of the default pathway. Added it, dropped my backup into the folder and we're good to go. Still have no idea what happened to the original data folder during the upgrade. This is why I do a data folder backup before any upgrades. Never had to use it before. Glad I had it to use this time. Thanks to all for the help.
